Excellent fast lens! Hard to beat it!

This is an amazing lens to say the least. A bit expensive, but you do at least get what you pay for, and in reality it is a fraction of the cost of an equal Canon or Nikon lens. I have used this lens on a Sigma SD14, Canon 300D, and a Canon 20D and it was fantastic on all three cameras.

The EX build quality is nothing short of stellar and the finish holds up very well. The AF is very accurate, but a tiny bit slower then its OEM counterparts, but definitely not slow overall. Not super loud either, which is quite nice. The dual focusing setup is a very nice feature. It gives the lens an excellent place to hold during AF and a nice large ring for MF too. Just slide it up or down to activate AF or MF.

This lens is also able to be used on FF sensors as well as your normal crop sensor cameras.

It has two(2) SLD elements as well as 3 aspherical(1 molded glass and 2 hybrids) inside to reduce and control chromatic aberrations. It also has the special DG coatings to reduce ghosting issues on digital SLRs.

It also has a nice petal type lens hood and carrying case too.

Image quality is hard to beat with this lens. Very sharp, contrasty, and accurate color reproduction as well.

Some copies can be a bit soft, but don;t worry, just send it off to Sigma under warranty and they will recalibrate it and you will receive it back sharp as a razor!

Very good bang for the buck Professional lens.

A Top Macro Macro Lens!

The Sigma 70mm f2.8 DG EX macro is among the best 4 best macro lenses in the world: Canon 100mm f2.8L IS, Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Micro and probably the sharpest one Sigma 150 f2.8 DG EX macro. Sigma 70mm f2.8 EX DG (special color corrected multi-coating and designed for any format APS or full-frame sensors) is absolutely sharp with great "bokeh" for macro shots and also portraits (sometimes too sharp for portraits). It fits very well in the APS cameras as a 100 or 112mm macro for that perfect distance in flowers & insects shots or as a super fast portrait lens. Fitted in a full-frame you'll get a great all purpose macro, landscape, portrait lens. I have had them all and I kept the 70mm and 150mm Sigmas. Since them I'm always ready for any kind of product, portrait and macro shooting. I'm a professional photographer based in NYC with 3 decades of experience.Read full review...

Loaded lens for its price! Built like a tank and takes sharp detailed pics.

Pros: Well built, Consistent output, sharp-detailed images, inexpensive, aperture

Cons: Low Quality f/2.8, heavy, slow focus, expensive 82mm filters, loud

I am an amateur photographer and I bought this lens as an upgrade from my basic Canon 18-55mm IS. I shoot with a Canon 40D SLR and needed a lens that could perform fast and efficiently in low light conditions as well daylight. This large aperture standard zoom lens covers a nice area from wide-angle to short telephoto. It’s 82mm focal diameter and f/2.8 – f/22 allows the lens to perform well in low light. Even though I like its performance in low light, I have found while shooting in f/2.8, lower quality dark photos with unwanted blurring occur. At times, there can be a considerable amount of AF searching in low light conditions, despite the fact that the lens showed it being “locked-on” its subject. I compared images shot at the 2.8 with my other lens (Canon 18-55mm IS), and overall the images were darker with the background being in focus more than the subject – I would not advise shooting in 2.8. It is not the quietest lens either; in quiet atmospheres the lens focusing will create come noise. The zoom range provides good versatility for my average use and I respect that it is built like a tank – it is solid and can be used for rugged purposed, though its 1.7lb weight can be awkward.

I use this lens for outdoor nature pictures, sports, and portraits. I would recommend this lens to any amateur with a moderate price range: it is loaded with great qualities for its price! Overall, the Sigma 24-70mm EX DG lens takes high-quality consistent pictures, which cease to please me. Its wide aperture provides for great lighting and detailed clear images. When reading professional reviews about this lens, I think it is a compliment that it is usually compared to the Canon 24-70mm L-series lens which is double to triple the price tag. Consider this lens a good buy.

Pro review of a pro-level third party glass. Great glass for the cash!

First, I'm a Pro-Photographer, I really USE my equipment. I only have Nikon bodies and glass.....until now. I decided to give this one a try, now it is one of my favorite lenses. Great images, nice in low light, perfect for portraits and weddings. This sucker is heavy, so if you're like me and have it on a D700 with power grip and a speedlight, you better have a nice padded strap! The push-pull action to go from AF to M focus takes a little getting used to but works well. It is a little stiff. My only complaint about the entire thing is the fact that the very short lens hood just will not stay locked into place. Again, it's so short that it barely accomplishes anything. I generally leave it in the 'parts box' in the studio. All in all, if you're in need of a fast 24 - 70, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try. If money is of no concern, go ahead and grab the Nikon version, it's only twice as much!Read full review...

Good For The Money

I purchased the Sigma 24-70mm F 2.8 DG for my Canon 20D for one main reason, I wanted the F2.8 aperature but didn't have the money for the Canon L series. Overall it's a good lens for the money, it's less than half what the Canon L version costs. Color is good, it could be a little sharper but what len's couldn't.

My only complaints are about the auto focus. It's much louder and noisier than the canon, it makes candid shots a little tougher because people can hear the motor. Also the focus is slower than I'd like. The Canon USM is much better but again much more expensive. You get what you pay for.

Overall not a bad lens for the price. Quality is solid and comes with a lens hood and soft case. I would suggest finding a local camera store and trying it out before buying just so you know what to expect.

Great Workhorse Lens

Threw this bad boy on my Canon 1DX and was suprised at the quality. Even at 2.8, image remained sharp. It's a little heavier than I thought but autofocus still runs smooth at least with the 1DX. Great purchase.Read full review...

Superb Lens

This is an amazingly sharp lens. Crisp pictures, robust body and durable finish. It reckons back to the day when lens were built tough, not like the cheap plastic ones of today. I really like this whole Sigma line of lenses, and it is little wonder they are taking so much of the market share, right now.Read full review...
