This is the Pharos 250N -- the N stands for new model

I have an old Pharos 250 GPS unit. The software must be 5 years old now. It is rather useless. The voice mispronounces 75% of the words, and the points of interest restaurants takes you to empty lots where restaurants once were. My new unit, the Pharos 250N now pronounces correctly 90% of the words, has a database that is only two years old, so more of the streets and points of interest are current. The destination entry is still counter intuitive. The address is entered by state, city, street name, and finally street number. Totaly backwards. The best feature on this model is that it is half the thickness of the old model, with much more gps sensitivity. It starts out cold in a couple minutes. The old one took over five minutes to coordinate its location cold. The old model had advance features that were worthless, like gps walking with a heavy clunky unit, and shortest, or fastest route, which frequently routed you in the wrong direction. The old model sometimes told you to make three right turns instead of turning left. The new unit works more effeciently, and is not as brain dead. I did a comparison of both units by turning them on together to see if they followed the same course. The new unit speaks better English, and has better graphics, but the audio is only half the volume of the old one, so you may not be able to hear it in a convertible going fast. If you can get the Pharos 250N at a cheap price, grab it. It is a basic unit that works. No traffic camera updates, no software updates, no fresh points of interest, not aware of closed, or new roads, but for the most part, when you get hopelessly lost, this thing saves your butt. To my dismay, the first day I recieved this budget unit, and was having so much fun driving with the old model and the new model side by side both speaking at the same time that I managed to get a $150. speeding ticket because I was not paying attention in a 25mph zone. What upset me is not that I got a ticket, but that I could have used that money to upgrade to model that had rerouting around traffic congestion and accidents. Oh well.... Its a budget no frill unit, that works. It speaks preety good English for something that is made in mainland China. I used to be patriotic and buy only US made items, but there is so little made in USA stuff left that it is a big joke now. China is where Japan was in the middle 1960's, and the quality is raising every year.Read full review...

Great GPS for the money

Quite impressed with the features and functions of a unit for this price. The Navigation seems accurate and reasonable. The only complaints are the unit is difficult to get out of it's mount and if you want to check your speedometer with the GPS speed have to go the the satellite screen which is somewhat buried several layers down. I would buy one again without hesitation, wish they had a motorcyle model.Read full review...

love this system

simple and easy to use. the touch screen is very handy especially if directions are needed ASAP. the woman's voice could be a little more pleasing to listen too, but other than that there are no complaints.Read full review...

Pharos Drive GPS 250n

I bought this GPS because I heard you could hack into Th O/S and change it. Well after using it for a while and getting used to it I no longer see any reason to change it. The unit has TTS and works quite well. The only thing my wife has noticed is the cold starts are a little lengthy, but other than that its a fine little unit for the price.

Great.

I really like it. You have to download maps and pay for them, but what's new. Everything comes with a price these days.

For the price I've paid the quality is excellent.

I had to download Canada maps (I knew it before purchasing) and it works perfectly. It offers points of interest, shopping malls, intersections, etc.
