Overall winner. Amazing zoom. Great size. Handful of gotchas

I read some professional reviews online and they had amazing things to say about it. I've had pocket Nikons before, so this seemed like a clear winner. Overall, it's fantastic for a "travel zoom" camera. It has a few down-sides, but is an overall winner.

The first amazing feature is the zoom. From 18mm (which is really wide-angle, wider than almost anything in its class) to 400mm (which is extraordinary zoom, again farther than most in its class). And that's all optical, not digital. The versatility you get on the shots is awesome.

The second great point is the LCD. It's clear, big, bright, and easy to use. The menus are standard Nikon. So if you know Nikon's way of doing things, it will be familiar. If you don't, it's not so bad.

The third great point is the size. It's small, it's fast to start up/shut down, and it's light. I throw it in my trouser pocket easily. It's like carrying a pair of iphones. Not tiny, but manageable.

For negative points, the first is probably the production quality. There are lots of people who complain that their camera just dies. Just locks up one day and never works again. I only read that after I got mine. I think it's just inconsistent quality at Nikon. The have a high rate of lemons on this one. I got lucky. My advice here is that if you run into trouble, return it right away and get another. Don't chance it. On the other hand, if you shoot for a few weeks with no difficulties, you're probably safe for the rest of the camera's life.

The battery is a bit of a mixed bag. I find it lasts a long time, and I get plenty of shots. But it's a proprietary battery. For $20 I got a spare battery and a charger (on eBay). But if you get caught out, you can't just pop into a local shop and get a couple AAs to keep going. Look out for capacities. Standard one is 1050 mAh. Some people sell cheap replacements that have only 900 mAh. If you try really hard you can find 1200 mAh batteries.

There are definitely times when I struggle to get a picture in focus. They're awesome when they're in focus, but sometimes I recompose 4 or 5 times to get it to focus. I occasionally find pictures that looked good on the LCD, but they are blurry when I download them. I now zoom in on the LCD to be sure.

Probably the most irritating thing in 2012 is to have a camera with no rotation sensor. You have to go back and manually rotate images, either in the camera itself or in your photo software. I find myself doing this while I'm idle on a trip (e.g., on a bus, waiting in line, etc.).

Good photos, great zoom, good shake sensors, great price.

I looked around for a Camera that would deliver good photos and I read some reviews and decided to buy the Nikon S9100 Camera, after taking some hand held shots with the "Coolpix S9100" I am convinced that I will stay with this Camera, although the Video Recorder could have more lighting features for low light Recording situations but considering the quality of the photos, I'll let the Video Recorder make it. I take more photos than Videos so I'm pleased with Photo quality. 4 Stars because 1. No Wi-Fi or sharing 2. No GPS 3. 1080p could be better 4. Focusing suffers in different situation. But considering the Price for this Camera you can't beat it. The Photos alone can sell the Nikon Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera. I'm Happy!Read full review...

great camera, battery door not good.

Battery door latch is almost non existent, the door will open when taken out of a case, or if you even touch it during shooting. Scotch tape is the only answer I have. Otherwise, great camera.'
>Thank you for contacting Nikon. I am sorry to inform you that there is nothing that you can do or buy to keep the battery door from opening. I checked on a couple we sites to see if I found a case that you can leave on and take pictures with but I did not find any. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us.

Thank you,

Great little light weight camera that makes picture taking easy.

I bought this camera based on a consumer report recommendation and have not been disappointed. It is simple to use, light and because it has a built in lense cover there is one less step to taking a picture. I am going to give it 4 stars because I am getting more blurry pictures than I hoped but that could also be operator error, not the camera itself!Read full review...

good super zoom camera

I really wanted to like this camera, beautiful screen, great features and controls, but I tried two of them and both were defective.

On the first one, the auto ISO function would not work below about EV10. It would meter the light level correctly, lock down at ISO 200, and give very long shutter speed times on low light/indoor shots. Probably why some folks are getting blurry photos with this camera. Then, after about 3 days of use the focus locked up. No more focus, even with a re- start and pulling the battery. Back it goes.

The second one also had the auto ISO problem. But I liked everything else about the camera so much I was willing to keep it, work around that glitch by manually setting the ISO in the menu when necessary, and wait for a firmware update. Less than a week later it started freezing up, with the blue screen of death, about every 24 shots or so.
It would re-boot by pulling the battery, but the shot was lost. Not good.

Took that one back and traded it for the S8200 instead. So far it is behaving, but the controls (knob and control wheel are plastic) and `feel' of the camera are not as nice as the 9100. Plus, the pop up flash on the 8200 is silly.

Great if you want small size and decent low light performance.

The BSI sensors make a difference with reasonably good performance even in lower light conditions. There is a minor reddish/yellowish hue in images which works brilliantly for skin tones and that is nice for me as most of my pictures contain a person in them. I would still rate some of Canon's cameras at this price point higher for low light conditions but otherwise, this camera is a really good choice. One little tip, the camera refused to power up while the external power is plugged in. While this is not important to me in 99.99% of the cases, it did irritate me that I could not test it rightaway and had to wait until the batteries were fully charged. HD Video quality is actually pretty decent for this model but you cannot expect HD Camcorder style quality from it.Read full review...

Nikon CoolPix S9100 Is A Nice Easy To Use Camera On The Go

I bought my Nikon CoolPix S9100 used. The person I bought it from took very good care of it and it came with the box, all the instructions and hookups etc. I like it because it's not as tiny as some of the models and it has a nice secure feel to it when your taking pictures or videos. The 12.1 MP is really all you need. I use the 8MP and it works great for me. The 18x wide zoom is great to have for those long shots but you may need to bring a tripod to keep it still. I like the looks of the camera and the black seems to hold up better than other colors to choose from. I have not had the camera very long but the pictures and videos I have taken so far are good for this kind of camera. I am happy with it and it's easy to take with you when your on the go.Read full review...

Happy with S9100. Would purchase again.

I did much research online for the best value for the price on point and shoot digital cameras in a certain price point. This was one that photographers recommended. I am not a photographer, but wanted it to be able to get rid of the 4 other digital cameras I owned, take good family pictures, sell items on ebay with good quality photos, etc.

I am happy with the picture quality, am learning about the features, love the size and weight of camera and believe I got a good deal on the price. I have found the battery to last long on the first charge and don't believe it needs a backup battery unless you shoot for long periods of time. The novice photographer probably won't need 2 batteries.

It is the nicest camera I've owned and my 3rd Nikon brand camera.

Tons of fun shooting in a half pound package.

Being a Nikon fan, I decided on this camera after reading a LOT of reviews. I was not disappointed nor was I surprised with the resulting package. The professional reviews were spot on and did a great job of expounding the virtues and vices for this lovely point 'n shoot.

It is a fully capable pocket camera, being neither the lightest or heaviest of its type. Its layout of controls is intuitive and does not get in the way of my modestly meaty fingers. It is easy to find what mode you wish to use quickly and easily and will keep the creative shutterbug in shivers of ecstasy for weeks on end. There is selective color choice, 180 Panorama (both horizontal AND vertical), insanely close up, 1080HD movies with reasonably good audio capture and loads of other features you will get to explore.

Items you will want to consider for purchase with this camera: an external charger and 1 or 2 extra batteries--not because it eats them quickly, but because you just won't want to be without the camera while your battery is charging. You will also be best served with high capacity SD cards (BTW, make sure and get the Class 10's since they don't cost that much more and will have much faster write speeds). Some form of handle to steady your grip when you extend your zoom all the way out--even in bright daylight you'll get fuzzy shots otherwise. This can be in the form of a small tripod (which probably won't hold its weight, but is easy to pack along). Lastly, make sure and have some little pouch to carry your stuff in. It won't have to be big, but you only have so much room in those pockets. ;)

I bought this camera because I missed so many pictures by not lugging around my 5+ pounds of Nikon D90 w/paraphernalia. I still LOVE my DSLR, but this is so easy and fun!!! You really need to get you one!

Fantastic camera and features...at a great price!

This camera does everything you'd want in a point/shoot. Takes great photos and is easy to use. My first time out with it at a party, I received numerous compliments on how great all the pictures were that I sent to my friends. I've had the SLR's and this one is as close as you can get without lugging around 5lbs. of camera. Love it!!Read full review...
