Good Value on Large Display GPS

The display is useful at this size, anything less is really tough. The touchscreen is very easy to use and interface is intuitive. The features are excellent for the price point, turn by turn voice command, bluetooth for your cell phone, points of interest to find restaurants, gas etc., 3hr. Battery capability to take it out of the car if hiking or mount to your motorcycle or quad, voice active calling. The bluetooth was real easy to sync and it pulls up your phone list so you just turn it on and link it once, then every time you bring your phone in the car and turn on the GPS it's ready to push a button and say the name you want to call!

Could use a larger selection of in-car mounts, The ability to leave "bread crumbs" to back track your trail, audio apparantly sounds a little distorted to those listening to you thru the bluetooth connection.

Garmin 1490T GPS

Let's get honest, I can get lost in my own backyard. Zero sense of direction so a GPS was something I have always wanted without paying monthly on my little cell screen.

A friend had bought this model and really liked it for $400 new. Ebay gave me lots of options- new and used- under $200. I got mine slightly used for just over $100. Works fine.

Likes: Finally, an affordable navigation tool! You can program and save your home and other destinations and it talks to you. If you choose another route, the Garmin automatically adjusts to your route. The satellite works quickly and
effectively. Garmin rarely gets the route wrong- like some GPS systems.

You can download map updates through mygarmin.com Need your UBS cord for this and a computer.

It has a trip planner and also will calculate your mileage and gas useage.

Dislikes: the dashboard attachment doesn't work in my car so it sits in my lap. The cigarette lighter cord broke so have a spare. Get a screen protector for the screen will scratch.

My next GPS will have a voice recognition so I can tell it where to go and not have to stop and plug in a destinatin address that I may not have with me.

But overall, for the price and quality, I am a satisfied customer. Garmin 1490T gets great reviews by consumers and critics.

Great features, Excellent support from Garmin

I bought a GPS because my wife gets lost and panics. This one looked real good with the best price at the time. I like the direction to correct lanes on highways. Have not had time to try all the features. We had one problem with this unit. It has problems working with my wife's and my bluetooth cell phones. Both phones are supposed to be compatible. Garmin Support has been very helpful and decided to replace the unit with another brand new one. It has been easy to upgrade the "firmware" and you get one free map upgrade which was easy to do also.
Assuming the replacement unit works with our bluetooth phones, this is a great gps in the low $200's. bright clear screen.

Eventually Worked

Since this was an old unit and may not have been used for quite a while there were some problems. I wouldn't charge at first but eventually did. Had much trouble downloading new maps and updates. But got working now and quite happy with it. Has a lot of features that my previous one did not have. Like that I can keep track of gas mileage and other things.Read full review...

Great unit at a great price. Definitely recommend.

Had a rough start with my unit. It took a few hours to download and install the updates, then it took about 5 minutes to find satellites for the first several startups. It seems to be settled in now and is up and running in about 15 seconds with no issues for guidance. I needed to use it that day and hadn't planned on so much effort to use the unit.

I've become accustomed to the Alpine-based Navigation systems in my vehicles and this doesn't compare to them at all. But, a $100-ish unit shouldn't be able to compare to a $1500+ unit. People should realize that when they buy handheld units like this - it isn't going to be as good, fast, or precise as a completely installed system.

HOWEVER, having said that, this is one of the better units available. It's easy to use, gets me where I'm going, and the screen is bright with a great display of the map/route. The voice alerts are clear and it uses street names. Upcoming turns are given well in advance. The layout is easy to follow and can be customized (take the time to read the manual). The touchscreen is adequate and does the job. It's large and has a wide viewing area. There's a good list of POIs and re-routes are calculated quickly.

Overall, it does what it's supposed to do. It's not perfect, but it really is a very good unit. Everyone I've recommended it to has also loved the unit.

Lifetime FREE updates for maps & traffic*Wonderful deal for the money

With all of the road construction that has been on going, I needed a way to avoid the long lines & delays, while traveling to other states. As I am NOT a NEW gaget person, I needed something that was easy to operate--right out of the box. The direction folder led me outside & within a matter of seconds, I was operating my NEW & first GPS. I was able to enter some of the information I needed & I was off to my first destination. Out of the box was the plug in for the cigarette lighter. There was also a plugin for my computer & the GPS stand.

The nice thing about the Garmin nuvi 1490LMT GPS unit is--if I don't like the route, I can go my own way & the Garmin will automatically change the route-instantly. The GPS voice will inform me where to turn--giving me street names & distance. The GPS will tell me if I missed a turn, even though I want to follow a different route, as I said before, it will instantly change my route for me.

The 5 Inch touchscreen is wonderfully clear & bright. The GPS voice can be adjusted-up or down & I can heard the GPS voice over the radio. Bluetooth wireless technology for hands free calling. Lifetime updates for maps & traffic for FREE.

If I could talk to the unit & make changes, without touching the screen or add the spelling of cities, streets, or routes, that would make it easier for a person, such as myself, to move forward without pulling off of the road.

All in all, I have used my GPS on 5 different occasions, the longest trip was 300 miles through road construction & detours & I survived nicely. Thanks

Product arrived in great condition & working perfec

I absolutely love this GPS! I did a lot of research before buying my first portable GPS unit and this unit presented the best features and biggest screen for the cost. Unit came right out of the box ready to use minus the software updates. Updating the software was a bit frustrating and time consuming but overall painless and easy. Easy to use functions, nice 5" inch screen, bluetooth capable and FM traffic updates! I also purchased the EcoRoute HD cable for advanced functions including accurate fuel economy and engine diagnostics. This product is a little pricey but should be worth every penny due to its multipurpose functionality. This accessory has not arrived yet, but I am very anxious. Highly recommend this GPS unit. The Garmin 1490T is a must!Read full review...

GPS - Garmin nuvi 1490LMT

It is a bit early to give a definitive review of this product. Like other Garmin products I have had, it is well made. The size is about right; not too big, not too small. I like that it has internal batteries which allow the unit to run while not plugged in; a feature my previous unit lacked.

Operating the unit is simple and there are some nice features, like the eco-challenge. At this point I am still learning how to use this and some of the other features.

Trip mapping is generally simple. But as with other units I have had the mapping is not always what I would consider as the "best" route. When driving on local roads I often ignore the suggested route.

Time will tell about the reliability of the unit and the value of the "lifetime" traffic and map features. Since I bought this unit to replace a Garmin 5000 unit that failed at about two months after the one year warranty expired, I have some concerns about the longevity of the new unit. Only time will tell.

At this point I am satisfied with the unit. The Good rating is based on the lack of long-term performance information that is needed to assign an excellent rating.

To Touchy Get Stylus other than that Great!

CONS:The screen is very very very touchy... Get a Stylus or you will never be able to control the screen movement with your finger, you will be all over the place. Also I live in a small town and it misses all the street names to the highway even the main road out of town to highway. PS I do have the settings to show all and even tweaked the settings ie shortest route, fastest route, avoid u truns etc and it still takes me 6 miles out of way to bring me back to one mile from where I started to get to Hwy.
PROS: decent on major roads, very accurate, and the traffic updates work fine and has avoided me several times from getting stuck in traffic due to accidents. Big Screen, and lane assist also A PLUS Lifetime updates up to 4 times a year. I did update right out of box and was very easy.

Garmin 1490LMT is a very good GPS choice

I purchased this unit as a replacement for Garmin's 765 model, which worked well until the connector for the power cord detached from the unit. I was happy to see the 1490LMT has a standard mini USB connector port that shouldn't break (as least as easily).

The 1490LMT has a 5" display, about 3/4 of an inch larger than the old model. That may not sound like much but it makes a big difference. The display is clear and readable, and the new model does a much better job of displaying complicated intersections and showing the driver which lane he/she needs to be in.

Menus are intuitive and allow the user to customize settings including brightness, volume, contrast, time/distance to location - along with many other features. Having the lifetime map upgrade feature and realtime traffic is a real plus - particularly in an urban area with plenty of construction and traffic challenges.

Only mild complaint is the unit occasionally throws out a route which isn't the best. The routes always work, but the unit may not pick the best one. This has improved over my previous 765 model - maybe it will be "perfect" when it comes time to get the next one!

Good buy for the money, in this user's opinion.
