Great features for the price, poor durability

Portable DVD players should give a good viewing experience and withstand the abuses of travel. This player, for the price, excels in the former and lags in the latter.

I like its trim size and large screen. It can easily fit in your book bag or briefcase. The picture is sharp and bright. The battery life is decent, though I have not watched a full-length movie on it. The volume is ample for both spoken and musical material.

I didn't like the fact that it defaults to widescreen all of the time. Most of my DVDs are SD, so I have to change the frame aspect ratio every time. Not a big deal, just an annoyance.

Another issue I have with it is the lack of a display button on the unit itself. Many times, I leave the remote control behind (since it is another small item that I can easily lose). I have basic arrow functionality, but no means of displaying what track number I am on. Oftentimes, I have to stop playing the DVD, and it would be nice to know which track I can jump to when restarting.

When on battery, it stops spinning within a minute or two and goes into screensaver mode to save battery power.

This unit only serves well in an environment that does not require it to move, such as an apartment or dorm room. It is not made to handle the rough and tumble world of portability. This is the second Coby DVD player I've owned (my first was a Coby TF-DVD7100) and the second Coby player to die 4 months into ownership. The manufacturer's warranty is a convenient 3 months.

Each time, the laser would fail to reach the outer parts of the DVD. It could only play the first part and then stop when attempting to play later chapters.

In each case, I bought a Mack Camera warranty, and each time it served me well. When I sent in the unit for repair for the first unit, I was told that it was unfixable. Mack Camera refunded my money. I am now in the process of boxing up my current unit, anticipating once again, that it will be unfixable.

Hence I have sworn off Coby DVD players. If you must get one, be sure to pick up a portable DVD player repair policy (like Mack Camera). You do not have to buy the warranty with the unit - you have 30 days to get one, and you can register it with Mack Camera at any time (despite their strong warning to register immediately). You can buy a Mack Camera warranty from any store that sells it, as long as the warranty description matches the item.

So if you plan to keep your portable DVD player on the move, don't buy this unit. This unit is built to last until the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty (3 months).

Good DVD player!

First of all, let me clarify the "good" rating. This is not a "top of the line model," but it is a very good unit for the price. I bought it for my wife to replace a player that went missing. The picture is very good, the volume is loud and clear, and the player seems sturdy. The only gripe I have...if you can call it that...is that the battery life is not sufficient. I don't know why a manufacturer would make a DVD player with a battery that won't make it through most feature films. That being said. It is a very good unit for the money, and I would buy it again without hesitation for the right price.Read full review...

Great little player!

This is a great little player for it's price. Decently durable. Sound slightly below par but if you use either headphones or even better computer style speakers you've got one heck of a great sound from it. Recommend you get a case to carry it in, makes it better than using the box. Battery life is really sweet and not like others this battery locks in place.

Over all on a grading scale I'd have to rate it a A- to a B+ and that's only due to the sound.

Great Unit

Great Little unit It played NTSC DVDs on 110 and DC on plane, and PAL 220 in Vietnam, all in the same day, without any complicated programing or switching. Battery staying power good, color, volume, all good. Displayed digital JPEG pictures very well. Worked great, plugged into the TV, sharing photos. Instructions not clear enough for an old klutz, but unit is not that complicated and trial and error works well.

Would I buy it again? Yep, already did./70LEW

Pretty Darned Good

My wife bought one of these for me when I was in the hospital earlier this year. I used both purchased and burned DVD's with no problems. Without the remote, the buttons are a little tricky but -- unlike with a lot of DVD players -- you CAN do most everything without the remote. I found the sound volume to be weak and had to use headphones for the most part. The picture is very bright and vivid. The screen size is good for up to about 4 feet away. The battery is rechargeable and lasts about 2 hours. This was money well spent.Read full review...

Coby DVD Player Review

I got this player about a month ago, since then we have used it several times for short viewings. plays quite nice too however the sound could be a little louder and a little less hollow sounding. I did time how long the fully charged battery lasts and its only 1 hour and 45 minutes, that’s it! so if it’s a 2-hour movie you better be near a plug of some sort. For our needs though I think it was the affordable choice to make. Over all its not a bad DVD player and it does enable the kids to watch something in the car (you better remember the car adapter though) so I do feel that it was worth what I paid, which for those interested was only $50.00.Read full review...

Nice for the price, great for kids!!!

nice little system for kids it seems to take being handled rough without breaking, nice picture and sound, the remote will probaly be handy but the batteries that were in it had rusted, strange since it was new system, hopefully it will be fine when i get new batteries. I do wish the rechargable battery lasted longer, but for the price I dont think you cant beat it.Read full review...

Nice little unit

Very compact but big enough for 1 or 2 kids to watch without being cumbersome. Could use more available volume from the speakers, headsets are a must if you are not in a quiet room. Most functions are on the remote and not the unit itself, but the ones you need most are simple pushbuttons on the unit. Overall a great value for the money for keeping the little ones entertained.Read full review...

Full Detail appreciated

The picture quality is pretty good, the battery life doesn't last too long so the shorter movies are a much better idea. The remote gets lost quite a bit...that's not really the product's fault though. Over-all I think I made a great purchase and would recommend it to anyone else.Read full review...
