Outdated in 2012, A610 is still fun when using Canon Hack Development Kit.

Bought the A610 after retiring its Vari-Angle predecessor the A80 sometime 2007. A610 is a major improvement from the A80 for sure. LCD is bigger. Camera weigh's less than the A80 with 4xAA batteries. Standard Movie mode no longer has 3 minute limit per clip. Uses SD rather than CF for memory. Accepts Lens Adapters that are of 52mm rather than 37mm .
Picture Quality
as long as objects in frame are not moving very fast than normal the pictures will be finely detailed otherwise blurry.
Decent at low light conditions with ISO 50-200 any higher will be very grainy.
Movie mode at its highest 640x480p 30fps is acceptable Audio is clear, but not best when zooming. Don't recommend movie mode at all since it's not SDHC compatible 2gb for only 20 minutes not worth it.
Durability
The A610 being the A-series the lower-end cameraline are not designed for durability in mind. As such will break in little pieces or fall apart over time with its cheap plastic parts if handled roughly.
Good points about the camera:
Power lasts relatively long on one set of 4xAA alkaline 1.5v battery. Took 1200 photos+30 minute video no flash using Enercell Alkaline 1.5v AA.
When doing timelapse photography a set of 4xAA Rechargeable 1.2v 2000mah Eneloops lasted on average 3hrs 45 min.

Canon Hack Development Kit firmware is available for the A610.
With that firmware it's on par with the Canon G-series of the time period. Can shoot in RAW format(.cr2 .crw .dng. etc.) though slowly. Can do Timelapse photography(fun when set to postcard mode that has timestamp.), High Dynamic Range photography. With CHDK it's possible to do 15+sec LongExposures for night photography with the A610, but I don't recommend it since the CCD sensor is inadequate. Plenty of grain and stuck pixel colors.
Drawbacks of A610 in 2012:
Cannot accept SDHC/XC memory which is the norm. limited to SDcards 2gb or less which are getting scarce for purchase in most physical retail stores.

6-7 years since its release... Is it still useful with outdated specs? I don't recommend the A610 with its standard firmware just for point & shooting. it'll be like every other P&S camera not in use anymore or rarely seen in use anymore. Highly recommend using it with CHDK for special projects with it you can do more than it was ever intended to do. Does the job well with daylight timelapse photography.

Verstalile camera, adaptable, easy to use

For this camera, I would prefer for it to be self-charging. Using four batteries can be difficult at times. The camera is solid, very easy to hold and focus, without shaking. The movable screen is probably the biggest help for me, in any situation when taking pictures, I can adapt.Read full review...

Great value!

Modern digital cameras offer more pixels but this one can make pics printable at A3 size, which is good enough for me. I bought this for my wife, actually, because it is a good camera and easy to use, but you can grow into it, if you get more serious. I found one like it at an estate sale and bought it for $2.50 because it had no shutter button. No problem. I repaired it and found that I had a really nice camera for next to nothing. This one cost more but it didn't need to be repaired.Read full review...

Canon PowerShot A610

pro: you can get one cheap & it's possible to make good quality pics with this.
cons: its a bit bulky for slipping in pocket or purse, there's a mode switch for either shooting or playback that i found annoying. if you like to review a shot after making it you have to exit shooting mode (lens retracts, the whole 9). you do get a brief review on lcd in shoot mode, but only the last shot. finally, you can adjust flash power +/- 3 in 1/3s, which is a great feature, and you can disable the flash entirely.Read full review...

love the canon a610

I have two of these cameras now... best point and shoot ever!! It's an older model, I think from 2006 but has 5 megapixels and has soo many features I sometimes discover new ones by accident. Uses 4x AAs batts, easy to hold, easy to use menu, swivel lcd panel is simply practical and makes taking pics a pleasure. My older model was showing signs of wear and I had to get another one recently...Read full review...

Very good camera, It's lower pixel count may not be for everyone

This product was bought to be used as a diving camera with underwater housing. I is proving to be a very capable camera. I has the typical Canon quality and more features that I will need for the intended purpose.
The pictures are very sharp and clear, even underwater.

I would recommend this camera to a friend.

Familiarity Breeds Content

Exact model replacement camera for family member who already knew how to operate this model. About $35 with Shipping was better than the $400 for a camera the family member was planning to buy -- and then not know how to use or not get the most out of such a camera.Read full review...

great cam

Canon PowerShot A610 is probably the best camera. It has great 1/1.7" CCD, replaceable batteries, reasonable resolution etc. It allows to make shots much better than most of newest cams can. Wish it still are being produced, then I will buy several for reserve :DRead full review...

Great Camera!

I owned this camera before, but lost it on a trip. I love the camera and this one was in great condition. I wish that the sd card came with it, but that is my only complaint.
