Perfect for what I wanted

The Apple Itouch 2nd generation is great for music, videos,pictures and the apps it will support. I can't download newer apps because it does not support the higher os needed. Do I care? No, I wanted it basically for music and movies. The sound quality is excellent and it holds a ton of music. The screen is nice for reading emails, checking traffic or watching movies.

For me it's a great music box and that's good enough.

Good but out dated

This ipod is great for music, but that is about it. All the apps seem to have higher requirements than this ipod will update to. The sound quality is great, the storage space is great and it's light weight. I love all of that. Just wish I could put a pinochle game on it.Read full review...

Apple iPod touch 3rd Generation (8 GB)

I bought this iPod from a friend last year for only $20 and traded a crappy china iPhone clone and it was in perfect condition looked like it was just bought the day before and was in the same condition when I sold it on eBay, now for that price and condition you can't really complain LOL.

This iPod did have some nice features that the 1st gen's did not come with and the built in speaker was one of them, it also sounded good but just a little distorted when turned all the way up. Now if you want even more features a jailbreak would be the way to go but just a FYI it also can be bad for the iPod (mine kept freezing up so I had to remove it) I only did it so I could change up the home screen background and themes, I hated just looking at a plain black screen was to blah.

1st gen touch vs 3rd gen, I had the 1st gen 8GB for 2 years and sold to a friend and I can say the 3rd gen is so much & nicer also for what both of them sell for on eBay just pay the extra 40 some bucks for the 2nd/3rd gens its worth it trust me. Now comparing this iPod to the new 4th gens they can't hold a candle stick to, the 4th gen is so much better in every way like the screen quality, camera's, voice control, etc.

Overall this would be a perfect iPod for someone who wants a iPod touch and can't afford the new 4th gen, this is the next best one.

Prepare for quiet once your teen gets this!

My daughter asked for an iPod a year ago...and I got her a 2nd generation. At the time, the iPod Touch was far too expensive so I thought I would make up for it by getting her the 2nd generation--inscribed.
Well, now the iPod Touch is affordable.

Personally, I have bought two in the last two months. Not because one was faulty, but, because my daughter loves hers so much that one of my sons also got one!

The portability cannot compare...not even with a bulky laptop.
Online access and plenty of games--music, photos...everything that keeps an electronic junkie mobile and satisfied!
Oh, and the best part--my own computer desktop is MINE again!
I've grown my store because we aren't taking turns on the computer anymore!

PROS-
* Endless mobile entertainment
* Compact online access
* Keeps my computer available for selling on ebay :D
* Affordable
CONS-
* Battery life--to be expected. Buy a wall/auto charger and that con is resolved.

OK for the purpose, but no room to grow; stick with G3 and above for that.

For what it is (inexpensive media player) and why I bought it (for my daughter to play music & videos and use as an alarm clock), it is OK. The 2nd Generation iPod can not be updated to the iOS5 and above, which means the vast majority of apps out there will not run on it. Some hunting needs to be done to find G2-compatible apps, but, if you find them, they're fine. This generation also lacks a camera, found on G3 and above, which means it is not usable for that function either.

Again, for an alarm clock and media player, the G2 is fine. I got a little iLove dock for it, which acts as a speaker, and activates the alarm clock app that comes with it, and now handles everything I have enabled my daughter to do with her touch, but, it leaves no room for growth, and it can be difficult to find current apps, as it is not upgradable.

This is a great product!

This has wi fi capabilities, and is a wonderful ipod touch. I chose this for my daughter because I was very afraid that she would loose it or break it, so I didn't want to spend the money on something brand new. This is just as good as her older sisters new one with only a few draw backs. There is no camera and the battery life is not as long. We got a car charger for it and she has a phone with a camera so no need for one on the ipod. If you are looking to save money on an ipod and still have all the great technology of an ipod touch a later generation is a great choice!Read full review...

3rd Generation iPod Touch may only be 2nd Generation

I've been in the electronics business for over 40 years and I'm very aware of the mistakes people, as well as businesses, make when identifying electronic devices. The iPod Touch is one example. When buying a used 3rd Generation iPod Touch, be certain to ask for the model or serial number to properly identify it. While 2nd and 3rd generation versions are very similar in appearance there is only a 32GB and 64GB version of the 3rd generation. The 3G models have a faster processor (800 MHZ) and better graphics hardware over the 2G models. Load times are as much as 50% faster as a result.

On the used market many of the 3rd Generation are merely 2nd Generation models with updated software. This enhances functionality but does nothing to change the internal hardware to increase the speed or better graphics. In addition, only 32MB and 64MB versions were manufactured as 3rd generation with the 8GB model still containing the older 2nd generation processor (533 MHZ) and graphics chips.

According to Apple: The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

So, if your only concern is to have updated software, then 2nd or 3rd generation iPod Touch models will do. However, if you want the increase in speed over the 2nd generation models then make sure you are buying either a 32MB or 64MB model by checking the model number on Apple's website.

Fun to use

It is fun to use. Lots of available apps. However, be careful especially if this is for a child. They can go to the apps store and purchase as long as they know your itunes login info. Didn't take long to rack up $10 in purchases. Thankfully I caught it before it got out of hand.
Battery life seems decent.
Durable. It was dropped on pavement and didn't lose it's charge.
Screen is very easy to see/read.
Lots of memory!!

Good but 4th is better!

I just got this for my son and to no fault of Apple, I don't like this one as much as the 4th generation. One thing I noticed right off was it doesn't take pictures or videos, which was the #1 selling feature for me on the 4th generation model. If you have the time, find a 4th used off Ebay, you'll be happier and will have spent just as much as you would for a 3rd generation model. Having said that, just about all products that introduce a newer model will have folks cheering for the latest one...its the nature of the business!Read full review...
