When a VW Bug Tries to Be a Pickup

Builders, Classics, European, Oddities  /   /  By Daniel Gray

Volkswagen produced several unique trucks over the years. But it takes the vision and skill of a brave car builder to transform a Volkswagen Beetle into a cute, custom pickup. That’s what we see with the modern 2000 Beetle pickup recently sold on eBay.

The former Bug has a custom pickup bed, new paint, custom wheels, and a sunroof. With only 34,000 miles on the odometer, it drives almost like new.

The builder took the Beetle to a new level by adding a locking tailgate adorned with vintage 1939 Ford taillights. By all appearances, the small car looks like a capable hauler. The rear wheel wells are especially beefy and curvaceous.

If you like the idea of a re-imagined Volkswagen pickup, consider two other customized VW vehicles (not Beetles) recently listed on eBay. First, there was a stylish, bagged purple 2001 Jetta five-speed converted to a utility vehicle. The Smyth performance truck-conversion kit—for Jettas and Golfs—was also offered on eBay.

Also, there was a 2007 Jetta converted into a truck.

A Fun VW Bug Pickup, Although Not Exactly Practical

VW Bug Pickup

This mellow-yellow VW pickup was listed on eBay a few years ago. It has an air-cooled single-carb 1600cc engine and a four-speed manual transmission. The powertrain sits naked in the breeze for all to see, with no sheet metal in the box to cover its magnificence.

The former Beetle’s engine is stock (other than a mild camshaft). A custom aluminum fuel tank is located at the front of the cargo bed, with the battery nestled between it and the passenger side of the bed.

The front suspension was rebuilt. But if you’re looking to bash this little beast in the desert, you could beef up the suspension components. Fifteen-inch alloy wheels are wrapped with staggered Douglas Xtra Trac II and Dextero DHT2 tires.

This Volkswagen Bug's cabin is squeaky clean.

Climb into the cabin, and you’ll find a squeaky-clean interior that’s been nicely executed with matching black vinyl upholstery on the low-back bucket seats and door panels. The VW pickup’s uncluttered dashboard highlights the Cyclops-like speedometer situated behind the three-spoke steering wheel. There are shoulder belts but little in the way of modern creature comforts.

A set of Ford Model A tail lamps add to the eclecticism.

Endless Possibilities

Consider these unique custom VW Beetle pickups as the beginning of an unlikely trend. There’s something irresistible about turning a Bug into something entirely new and wild. Here are more ideas:
