The Classic 1957 Ford with Two Front Ends

The possibilities—and the jokes—are endless with the extremely unique 1957 Ford currently offered for sale on eBay. While we’ve seen a number of examples of two-headed makeovers, this might be the first of its kind using one of Ford’s most popular model years.

The current owner came across an ad for the car three years ago, drove to Massachusetts where it was located, and found it sitting behind a barn where it had been awaiting a restoration for five years. Apparently its owner at the time had good intentions, but lost interest in the project.

After hauling the car back to Connecticut, the new owner’s research discovered that the original project was the brainchild of students at Bismarck Junior College in North Dakota. Two years in the making, the most unusual Ford was completed in April 1968 and was used as a marketing tool at fairs and parades. There was a sign bolted to the roof that read, “Always Forward, Bismarck Junior College.” Following that period, the car moved on to a display located at a Springfield, Mass. glass shop for the next 20 years.

Because the car had been sitting for so long, the current owner had quite a frame-on restoration to tackle. The body was in rough condition and it took about three months for a body shop to straighten out the panels and repaint the car in its original white over green colors.

The original interior appeared in better condition, needing only a thorough cleaning, new headliner, and the replacement of a couple of the side windows.

Work on the drivetrain proved to be more difficult. Originally, the car drove from both ends through an assortment of cables and linkage. The car could only get to five-mph speed because the driveshaft was on a 45-degree angle. The owner wanted to redo the car so he could easily drive it to car shows and cruise nights.

He removed the rear end, which was actually the front end of a 4×4 International Scout—enabling the vehicle to turn. That setup was replaced with a 1972 Ford Torino rear with its associated springs and shocks, along with a new custom-made double driveshaft.

The Ford’s custom fuel tank.

Power under the front hood is supplied by Ford’s 223-cubic inch straight six, which received a full tune-up, along with the brake system. Opening the rear hood gives access to the custom fuel tank.

The next owner will quickly become the talk of the neighborhood. The only question might be, “Which end do you back it into your garage?”
