The company behind the ARGO brand is Ontario Drive & Gear Limited (ODG), founded in 1962 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Initially, ODG focused on engineering precision transmissions and drive gears for the North American market.
In 1967, it developed a special transmission for a six-wheel drive all-terrain vehicle called the Amphicat. ODG realized the potential for growth in this newly created segment and launched the first ARGO vehicle in 1967. ODG chose the name ARGO in honor of the strength and stamina of the Argonauts from Greek mythology, whose ship was called the Argo.
Space: 1999’s moonbuggy was based on the Amphicat.
It wasn’t until 1971 that ARGO introduced its first eight-wheel-drive vehicle. It had one of the largest cargo capacities on the market and was powered by a 440-cc two-stroke Kohler engine. ARGO continued making improvements and revisions—like moving from two-cycle to four-cycle engines—to enhance its capability to traverse terrain that traditional ATVs and UTVs often could not. The ARGO all-terrain gives outdoor enthusiasts easier access to remote areas. As a result, ARGO vehicles have become essential for utility companies, forestry services, mining exploration, and other industries where mobility on land and water is vital.
