PART 1: All Roads Lead to Volvo

Classics, Community, European  /   /  By Brenda Priddy

I can’t say that I planned to do it. Impulsive? Maybe. Spontaneous. Definitely. Crazy? You bet! But I’m now the proud owner – well, as soon as it’s paid in full – of a classic Volvo that’s just as old as me!

Every once in a while I’d scan the pages of eBay Motors, [ClassicCars]Calsscars.com, and others for my dream car. I can’t afford – and I’m a bit past the milestone – of my must-get-by-50 new Porsche, so I look for other cars that appeal to my quirky senses. I usually go for automobiles a bit smaller in size than average: Subaru 360, Citroën 2CV, Goggomobilor American Bantam pickup truck as examples.

I’ve been waiting since December for a distant acquaintance to list their 1932 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup (they won’t sell it outright without an auction, and it’s currently sitting outside in the elements), but when they do offer it at auction, I’m guessing it will fetch way more than I’m prepared to pay. So when I saw a Volvo PV544 listed on eBay Motors, a car that represents my birth year (I know – you thought I was decades younger), a car that is drivable “right out of the box / no assembly required” – it caught my attention. It’s not a convertible, not even a sardine-type rollback roof, not a truck with my business logo painted on the door in a vintage style, but yet – a kind of quirky Volvo (aren’t they all) with a bit of “post war styling” (WWII, kids), yet small for its styling – and – with standard seatbelts! What more could one ask for?

I didn’t really plan to “win” this Volvo PV544 on eBay’s auction site, but like most eBay bidders – I waited until the last 40 seconds before I placed my bid. I guess that’s just a habit.

TIP: IF YOU DON’T WANT TO WIN, DON’T BID IN THE LAST 40 SECONDS.

And, as quick as you can say, “what am I getting myself into?” – I became the proud owner of a yet unnamed old classic Volvo.

It’s only been 14 hours and 51 minutes since I hit the enter key and changed my finances forever. Today I’ll research both payment methods and shipping options (not to mention, juggling things in my bank accounts).
