A massive 429 cubic inch V-8 gets shoehorned into a 1969 Boss Mustang on the assembly line, back in the day. New components from Ford Restoration Parts often use original tooling.
A world-class car restoration project should add up to more than the sum of its parts. But those parts still need to be the right stuff. That’s why Rutledge Wood and the crew at Kenwood Rod Shop are using factory-authorized Ford Restoration Parts—all sourced from eBay Motors—to restore their 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. Factory-authorized parts ensure that every component is the highest quality and authentic. (Learn about the eBay Motors Mustang and “On The Road with eBay Motors” tour.)
About two dozen companies are authorized to produce Mustang parts for Ford Restoration. These companies specialize in everything from sheet metal to sun visors and door panels to decals. For nearly 55 years, the Ford Restoration Parts program has allowed licensed parts-makers to retrieve blueprints and utilize original tooling—so when you see that it’s a “Ford Official Licensed Product,” you know it deserves to wear the blue oval logo. Beyond the Mustang, the program authorizes parts for vehicles ranging from a 1908 Model T to a 2005 F-150 pickup.
The Retailers Bring the Goods
The bulk of the orders for the ’67 Mustang was placed with two long-time eBay merchants: CJ Pony Parts in Harrisburg, Pa. and Classic Design Concepts in Wixom, Mich.
CJ Pony Parts, founded in 1985, has been active on eBay since 1999. Rick Moyer, the product development chief at CJ Pony Parts, owns a pair of 5.0 Fox Body Mustang project cars. (He’s also on the lookout for a 2000 Cobra R to add to his collection.) All the sheet metal replacement parts for the eBay Motors Mustang were ordered through CJ Pony Parts. Most of those parts were produced by Scott Drake, an official Ford licensee based in Henderson, Nev. The company, which uses original tooling, is considered the world’s largest manufacturer of reproduction parts for classic Mustangs.

George Huisman launched Classic Design Concepts in 1990. The company designs, produces, and retails select parts for 1987 – 2017 Mustangs. Classic Design Concepts, which has been selling on eBay for more than a decade, specializes in restyled components with meticulous fit and finish. Huisman owns several big-block Mustangs and Cougars from the late 1960s, along with a 2015 Mustang convertible. If he could own any Mustang, it would be a 1969 Boss 429.
Classic Design Concepts supplied the lion’s share of drive train parts for the eBay Motors Mustang project, including the massive 428 Cobra Jet V-8 and Tremec six-speed manual transmission.

The Team Turns to the Interior
With the sheet metal work done and the powertrain in place, the eBay Motor team is now compiling an order list for interior parts. It’s like putting together a puzzle with more than half of the pieces missing. “We just have a pair of bucket seats and a few little trim pieces,” said Randy Allgood of Kenwood Rod Shop, where most of the work is taking place. “We’re assembling all the pieces to see what we’re going to need to get the interior put together,” he said.
The team hasn’t decided whether to keep the stock seats or go with aftermarket units. While the upholstery is in good shape on the buckets, the seats need work. If they keep the stock seats, at a minimum they’ll replace the foam and substrate.
The clock is ticking and the deadline is approaching for shipping the fastback to the Woodward Dream Cruise—where master builder K.C. Mathieu formerly of Gas Monkey Garage’s Fast N’ Loud will show off the selection of wheels and tires for the fastback on Aug. 19.
