1969 Datsun 510 Restomod Mixes Japanese, American and Euro Style

Asian  /   /  By Daniel Gray

The Datsun 510 was one of the coolest little 1960s cars to find its way across the Pacific. The 510’s styling and mechanicals echoed the BMW 1600, which evolved into the famous BMW 2002. The gorgeous two-door 1969 Datsun 510 restomod for sale on eBay takes on an international flair by adding components from Dodge and Subaru.

The 1969 Datsun 510 looks like a Bimmer. However, its handling initially fell short. In response, Datsun addressed that quickly, with a factory-backed parts initiative and racing effort. The vast majority of the 510s on the road today have modded suspensions.

Enthusiasts also refer to the Datsun 510 as the “five and dime.” Or just the “dime” for short.

The Datsun 510’s Racing Manners

The eBay car received the full treatment at Metalworks, a premium hot-rod shop in Eugene, Ore. Metalworks founder Jon Mannila and his team focus mostly on US models, specializing in pro-touring builds. That helps explain the American and Euro flair to the 510.

Metalworks shaved the 1969 Datsun 510’s badges, sidelights, and sail-panel vents before applying the red and white BASF urethane base and clear coat. The brightwork benefits from extensive re-chroming and polishing. A JDM Datsun “SSS” badge adorns the grille.

Above all, the little Datsun gem was built to be driven. It rides on Rota RB alloys, wrapped with Yokohama 195/50R15 tires. The stance is proper, and there’s sufficient sidewall.

In addition, the 510’s front suspension uses T3 coil-overs equipped with adjustable camber plates, while the rear features a set of coils swiped from a Dodge pickup. KYB Gas-A-Just shock absorbers, Suspension Techniques anti-roll bars, and a slotted rear crossmember kit keep things in line.

The engine is an upgraded Nissan L18, equipped with all the right stuff. For instance, the list of engine components include:

The output is estimated to double the original engine’s 96 horsepower. A five-speed 280Z transmission replaces the original four-speed. All those ponies find their way to a limited-slip Subaru WRX STi rear.

Signature Red and White Paintwork

The visual style of the 1969 Datsun 510 for sale on eBay is a tribute to Pete Brock, the legendary car designer. Brock’s signature look used red-and-white paintwork.

Brock Racing Enterprises served as the west coast Datsun factory race team in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In 1955, a 19-year-old Brock became the youngest designer ever hired by the General Motors styling department. He is perhaps best known for his work on the Corvette Stingray. In the 1960s, he worked for Shelby American, where he designed such cars as the De Tomaso P70 and the Shelby Daytona Cobra.

After that, in 1972, Brock quit racing and embarked on a second career in hang gliding.

Datsun 510 Interior Features

The interior is fully caged but far from spartan. The upholstery is a delightful cream leather on Pro Car buckets, and the carpet is a dark tan square weave.

The steering wheel, door handles, and window cranks are Billet Specialties units. The dashboard is custom fabricated with Dakota Digital gauges.

If you grow tired of the four-banger’s symphony, a Rockford Fosgate audio system stands ready.

Finally, the seller states:

This wild 510 has been heavily modified with all high-end components and is ready to be enjoyed.
