Pontiac is widely credited with launching the muscle car craze in 1964. That’s when engineers shoehorned a big V-8 into the brand’s new midsize model, added upgraded brakes and suspension to handle the extra power, and called the result the GTO. It was an overnight success.
Pontiac’s new car set the standard for performance (and inspired songs). First-generation models remain some of the most prized muscle cars today, and the 1966 Pontiac GTO coupe recently available on eBay is an exceptional example.

While largely original, it benefits from a few upgrades for increased performance and drivability. The tidy engine compartment presents a largely stock appearance. But the original four-barrel carburetor was replaced with a three two-barrel carb “Tri-Power” setup.
That gives the numbers-matching 389-cubic-inch V-8 increased power and response. Chrome valve covers and air cleaners help dress things up, and the engine was fitted with an aluminum radiator for improved cooling. Other details include a period-look Delco battery with red caps. A new stainless steel dual exhaust system improves breathing and sound.
It’s a Post
This 1966 Pontiac GTO stands out from the crowd as a rare two-door post coupe instead of the more common pillarless hardtop configuration.
The paint, professionally refinished in its original Martinique Bronze, shines like new. Without the bold stripes and graphics typical of competing muscle cars of the period, the paint lends a subdued appearance to this GTO. There’s little indication of the power lurking beneath that gleaming hood.
Stacked headlights add to the formal appearance. That unusual styling feature disappeared after 1967 models.
The restoration included new front and rear bumpers, headlight bezels, dual front grilles, and most other exterior trim. The tinted windshield and all other glass are in excellent condition. All panel gaps appear to be even. Extensive photos show no evidence of rust or other body damage. Even the underside is spotless, showing minimal signs of use since completion.

This 1966 Pontiac GTO’s cabin is indistinguishable from new. Much of it is new. The restoration included a completely new Parchment interior, with replacement upholstery, carpets, headliner, door panels, dash pad, and woodgrain trim. Desirable options include a full center console, four-speed manual transmission, and a working AM radio. New window seals were installed to ensure a quiet and leak-free interior. The impeccably detailed trunk includes the correct mat and spare tire.
Underneath, the suspension was completely redone with new components for secure handling and performance. New red stripe radial tires still wear factory stickers and have been fitted on the correct Rally II wheels. The front end was professionally aligned in preparation for the sale.
This GTO is as clean and well-sorted an example as you’re likely to find. Moreover, it has the most desirable and potent powertrain offered in 1966.
This GTO’s post-coupe layout and the unusual color combination set it apart. With all the heavy lifting done, all this 1966 Pontiac GTO needs now is to be enjoyed.
