This Topless Grand Cherokee Starred in a Tommy Hilfiger Ad

Convertible SUVs are not a new thing. The Ford Bronco, Chevy Blazer, GMC Jimmy, and Dodge Ramcharger have all offered removable hardtops at some point, and the Jeep Wrangler continues to feature a door-less, roof-less option. But other than the 4-door version of the Wrangler (the Unlimited), family-oriented four-door sport-utility vehicles in North American have not been available with a convertible top. That’s what makes this open-air Jeep Grand Wagoneer, now offered on eBay Motors, such an unusual entry in the classic-truck category.

The 1986 Grand Wagoneer as decked out for Tommy Hilfiger

This 1986 Grand Wagoneer was built for a Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign. It’s no hacked-up Sawzall special: The Jeep comes with a professionally-installed roll bar, and a Bimini-style top to keep passengers from getting too wet should a sudden storm appear on the horizon. And for kicks, it also has a fridge sitting in the cargo area.

We’ve covered Jeep Grand Wagoneers in the past, including efforts by several restoration companies to produce new versions of these popular trucks to satisfy customers with deep pockets. One of the longest-running nameplates in SUV history, the Grand Wagoneer survived Jeep’s transition from AMC to Chrysler and was built until the early 1990s, before it was replaced by the Grand Cherokee. The hallmarks of the Grand Wagoneer’s appeal are its classic lines, rugged four-wheel drive, and stout (if thirsty) 360-cubic inch V8 engine. This vehicle’s powertrain was not enhanced to elevate its solid ride beyond the ordinary.

The convertible conversion, which was repainted, has a few blemishes. The driver’s door trim might require some hinge alignment issues. The vehicle’s front bumper needs to be re-mounted, and there’s a dent on the rear bumper. Also, there’s no mention in the listing of any under-vehicle bracing to make up for a potential loss of structural integrity when the roof was removed.

Those finer points aside, one thing’s for certain: The next owner will be the only one on the block with a convertible Grand Wagoneer, particularly one that’s been seen by millions in fashion magazines. With those stylish custom seat covers, too, the owner won’t regret leaving the roof unsnapped—even during a sudden squall— just to show off this unique Wagoneer’s rugged good looks.
