The 2014 Volvo XC60 is a mid-size crossover/SUV that has distinguished styling, an extensive list of safety equipment, and all-weather capability. Handsome and chiseled from almost any angle, the XC60 defies the stodgy look of its Swedish wagon brethren and carries a certain savoir faire attitude. The interior is distinctly Scandinavian — with its floating center stack, dial-operated console, and supportive leather seats that are comfortable for hours — it has a look and feel that can match up to the best European cabins on the road today.

For 2014 the Volvo XC60 received its mid-cycle refresh that features a new hood shape and front-end design. The headlights, bumper, grille and exhaust have all been updated, and cyclist detection has been added to the City Safety collision avoidance system. Significant mechanical updates include a new 8-speed automatic transmission and two flavors of the all-new turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E engine family: a 240 horsepower (T5) powerplant and a more powerful 302 horsepower (T6) engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged.

Inside, the XC60 gets a new infotainment system that has an improved look and feel. Lots of buttons and knobs give a busy look to the center console, but the arrangement is intuitive and easy to learn than past models. The nicer Sovereign leather is also available on upper trims of the XC60.

The XC60’s tall roofline affords a lot of passenger space inside. It’s only a five-seater, but busy parents with weekend-hauling tasks will appreciate the level of versatility and cargo capacity. Legroom can be a bit tight in the second row and there’s not quite enough width for three adults. But cargo space is impressive — more than 30 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks up. They fold down (albeit not quite flat) to more than double the space.

The best thing about a Volvo is that you will always find incredible safety technology and top-notch occupant protection in all of their vehicles and that includes the refreshed 2014 XC60. A long list of active safety features are available that help reduce your chances of an accident; Blind Spot Information System, Distance Alert, Driver Alert Control, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control. In addition to all of those great safety features is Volvo’s City Safe system that automatically brakes to reduce the impact with other vehicles and the optional Pedestrian Detection feature that brakes at low speeds for pedestrians.

When the XC60 was first introduced in 2010, the SUV quickly became a popular choice for a new family car because of its versatility and strong safety reputation that is inherent with all Volvos. The Swedish built crossover is Volvo’s most popular SUV and offers consumers everything they could ask for in a new car. Its mid-cycle refresh has improved the Volvo SUV in many ways and is a solid choice for young families and professionals.
