Mrs. Robinson – you are trying to seduce me … Aren’t you?

eBay Listing: 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto

“Sexy” is a very subjective word frequently applied to people, but it also describes the curves of the Alfa Romeo Duetto or Spider. Sure it could apply to other cars too but for us there is a romanticized relationship with Italian car manufacturers. They have a passion that is hard to replicate.

One favorite automotive journalist on Top Gear, a British television show, once said something like, “You can’t be a true petrol head until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo.” We agree. When he and his fellow automotive journalists purchased used examples it was a near catastrophic experience on reliability and common sense. Yet despite Top Gear’s own comedic outlook, we still got their message, which was essentially that “Alfa Romeo’s magic” cannot compete with a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

It might not always start up every time, or at all, so it might be a bit daft to purchase one, but sometimes driving roads in a sports car as pretty as an Alfa Romeo means that you don’t always need to be so logical and calculated. Sometimes the occasional splurge on something so stunningly beautiful just has to be done, and hopefully in the end, is to be enjoyed as a bit of fun in a sexy body. And who doesn’t want something like that?

The Graduate

Now this author has had the terrible misfortune to have never driven an Alfa Romeo Duetto, however here is what he knows about the car. It supposedly has a long gear throw in its manual transmission, gauges that are supposedly deep and fluted, and like many Italian cars, it looks stunning in red. A similar vintage car was the vehicle of choice for Ben, the character in the 1960’s film the Graduate. That film’s driving scenes, make us long to replicate them – driving in a convertible to Simon and Garfunkel’s song ‘Mrs. Robinson,’ on a sunny summer day, with the wind in your face, and sun on your back. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Our choice this week is a 1967 Alfa Romeo 1600 Duetto with 4 cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. According to the listing, the little Alfa Romeo has 160,000 miles. The restored soft-top Duetto appears to be in fabulous condition and would be a great addition to any car enthusiast’s collection.

‘Here’s to you’ Alfa Romeo for putting out a sexy symbol of the swinging 60’s, all wrapped up in a vibrant Italian red. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bid now before this convertible classic gets away. Auction listing ends July 7, 2014 11:06 (PDT): 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto
