eBay Listing: 1966 Porsche 912
Porsche – the very name conjures up images of racing cars like the 356, the 911, the 914-6, the 917 race car, the Carrera GT, and now the 918 Hybrid. They constantly are upping their game to create race bred sports cars and super cars. Yet, they’re still diverse enough to put out SUV’s on occasion or sedans as of late. But, in the words of a street racer from a fictional yet famous film franchise, “It don’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winnings winning.” And, as the old adage goes, if you win on Sunday you sell on Monday. At least that is how it used to be.
For those of us who cannot afford the 911 from 1963-1970, what are our other options? Well, there are a handful of front-engine water-cooled Porsches to choose from like the 924, 944, 968, and 928. Most of which were designed to replace the 911 but which never truly replaced the 911 as the 911 is still around and those other models are extinct. If you love the sound of a mid engine air-cooled flat 4 or 6, then a Porsche 914, or 914-6 might suffice nicely. But, today we’re going back to basics with another rear engine air-cooled boxer engine Porsche. No not the granddaddy 356, but the Porsche 912.
While the prices of early 911’s are going stratospheric, 912 prices are rising too, just not at such a pace to scare off a relatively entry-level collector. Today’s Porsche 912 is currently bid up to around the $40,000 mark, and while that might be a lot of money to some, it’s still cheaper than a lot of other classic car alternatives.
Sometimes it is as simple as something like a car’s color combination, and specification that draws us in. In the case of this particular 1967 Porsche 912, it was the Fuchs alloy wheels, and the Irish green color, that suits the car so well.
In the end does it really matter why we chose this car over another racing Porsche? It might, but what truly matters with old racecars and any Porsche, be it air or water-cooled, is that they all have the heartbeat of a champion. Call it a Porsche however you may pronounce it we call it a winner. Bid on this winning combination that is a Porsche 912 before it is gone.
