The 2015 Subaru WRX STI Launch Edition is a limited production model of which only 1,000 units will be built this year. Based on the completely redesigned WRX STI, the Launch Edition gets the iconic WR Blue Pearl paint and gold-painted 18-inch BBS alloy wheels wrapped in 245/40R18 summer performance tires. It also gets a special interior featuring blue highlights and comes standard with the STI Short-Throw Shifter for the 6-speed manual gearbox. Other extras include a Keyless Access & Start system, offered as an option on WRX STI Premium and Limited models, and Alcantara upholstered sport seats with blue leather accents.
STI Launch Edition is priced at $37,395 plus $795 destination.
Setting itself apart from WRX in dramatic ways, the STI gets a stiffer chassis, firmer springs and quicker steering (13.0:1 ratio). The steering is still controlled hydraulically, unlike many competitors that now use electromechanical systems. Subaru quickened the steering ratio, from 15.0:1 to 13.0:1, in order to maintain a suitable level of liveliness in wheel. Power comes from the same 305 horsepower 2.5-liter turborcharged Boxer 4-cylinder engine used in the previous generation.
Using the same six-speed manual and trio of limited-slip differentials, the new STI’s most noteworthy chassis addition is a brake-based torque-vectoring system for the front axle. Before torque reaches the helical-type front or Torsen rear limited-slip differentials, it must go through the Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD). It is also of the limited-slip variety and has a few modes that vary the fore-aft torque split automatically. There is also a driver-selectable manual mode. In its most extreme setting, the DCCD will direct 65 percent of the torque to the rear wheels.
The roomier cabin has leather bolsters for the Alcantara-covered seats which are blue and black with black stitching rather than the red and black with red stitching in other STI models. The door trim panels are blue leather with black stitching, and the Alcantara-covered center console storage box lid features black stitching. Blue trim accents the carpeted floor mats that carry the STI logo.
