This flash is great for doing high speed sync and TTL flash photo. I use it with my Nikon D800 and D4 and get great results. For quick results I use it mostly as a bounce flash off White walls. If the wall is colored, I use a softbox modifier or the built-in reflector card. The TTL is great in most cases with few exposures requiring flash compensation. This flash works on all digital and film camera and it's only limited by the camera's functionality. It's a great flash at a good price if can be had for $200 or less. I got mine for $150 plus. I love this flash so I have three.

Best value for used Nikon flash today. You could probably get 2 of these used for a price of one used SB910. They are reliable, and durable. I bought 3 used on EBay and use the heck out them. All still working fine. More compact than SB900 series and just as bright, cheaper and just as useful as SB700 series and better and more feature laden than SB600.

I have shot with an array of Nikon brand as well as after market flashes and this SB800 is the one I have come back to and have purchased one for each of my three Nikon DSLR camera outfits as well as one extra as a back up; and they have all been bought used on Ebay. This flash just keeps on firing. ( I do have a Quantum battery power pack hooked up to it to get me more flashes). It makes my "slow" lenses work about as well as my "fast lenses. I shoot a lot of night time dirt track racing, and I have yet to shoot this flash on full power! Plus it is very easy to sync 5 flashes together for a great studio light set up as well. Just a great hot shoe flash! Thanks Nikon and to Ebay.

Works great with Nikon d700. Really improved my shots. I like how you can angle it. Just what I was needing.

I have yet to be burned buying any gear off of ebay, however in these times any place you can save a few dollars is good. Doing digital event and wedding photography, SB-800's are the standard and while I have many lights available to choose from, this is the first choice. With the right diffuser they will mimic studio lighting and for the limited punch SB-800's have it suits digital photography just fine. It does have some limitations for every situation, but you can't beat its on camera portability and decent recycle time. Having to shoot alone with one light and moving around there is no way to do it lighter or faster. Not having to carry a heavy power pack or crazy flash bracket, even better. The unit I just got was missing a case and the extra battery holder. The book is avalable online so its not killer. Still I saved a few dollars but you have to be watchful as many people seem to drive the price up, why who knows. If it had a little more power I'd rate it higher, thats for the SB-900 though.Read full review
I am nikon D3X user with SB800 - Its Best flash ever from nikon!!! Intelligent, innovative, indispensable The new Speedlight SB-800 introduces a number of refinements to D-TTL flash performance technologies, Nikon term i-TTL. Flash Colour Information Communication A new system designed to improve AWB (Auto White Balance) irrespective of flash output duration. Until now flash lighting can exhibit changes to AWB depending on flash to subject distances. Long (distant) duration outputs tend to be redder, short (close) durations tend to the bluer end of the spectrum. The new SB-800 incorporates systems that communicate flash output information during exposures to the image processing ‘engine’ of the new Nikon D2H Digital SLR. The principle is to deliver uniform AWB results during flash exposures of varying subject distances. Flash value Lock (FV-Lock) The SB-800 introduces a new FV-Lock function that enables the user to ‘lock’ flash output over a sequence of shots, in the same way and using the same camera body button as the AE-Lock (AE-L) function used for ambient exposure lock. AUTO FP High-Speed Sync The mechanical shutter of the D2H has a flash sync speed of 1/250th sec. The new SB-800 can automatically set itself to FP (Focal Plane) flash mode should camera shutter speed rise above the standard flash sync speed for Balanced Fill Flash in bright light with high shutter speeds or fast aperture lenses. FP mode outputs a series of smaller continuous flashes that synchronize at up to 1/8000th second with the new Nikon D2H Digital SLR. Wide Area AF-assist illumination Compatibility with the Nikon D2H extends to performing AF area assist illumination to the new wide 11-area layout of the D2H Multi-CAM2000 AF system, to deliver precise AF performance in lighting situations below the AF system’s –1EV (ISO100) sensitivity. In addition to the refinements of i-TTL the new SB-800 incorporates innovative new systems for multiple location lighting arrangements as well. Advanced Wireless Lighting The SB-800 incorporates Nikon’s exclusive Advanced Data Communication technologies that enable complex inter Speedlight unit communication. The system is designed to make shooting with groups of Speedlights as easy to use as a single on camera Speedlight. Up to 3 SB-800 units can now communicate monitor pre-flash data with the Master unit for fully automatic multiple flash exposures, removing the need for flash meters or manual calculations. The D2H Digital SLR 1005-pixel Matrix metering sensor is utilized to calculate exposures, and transmit each Slave output changes back to each Slave unit. Additionally, for those desiring full creative control of the output of each individual Slave, the photographer can remotely control each of Slave SB-800 Speedlight unit’s flash modes directly through the Master unit. The Master unit output can even be switched off whilst maintaining full control and communication with Slave units. In situations where photographers may not be working alone, the Master- Slave communication can be 4 channel selectable enabling up to four photographers to independently control their own slaves to avoid the risk of triggering others using the same system. Distance Priority Flash Mode Increased control of flash output is also offered in new Distance Priority Mode. The photographer can pre-set subject distance and desired aperture setting, the SB-800 calculates consistent output uninfluenced by colour or reflectance of the subject.Read full review
The SB-800 is a perfect choice of flash no matter what level of photography you are into. The 800 packs much more flash than the 600 for those darker rooms and you can get the SD-8A external battery pack to reduce recycle time for the flash far beyond anything many could imagine! We use these for fill flash outdoors and for our every day photography. In the studio, they are more than sufficient to set off studio strobes with light triggers with plenty of power left over. Wireless use of the flashes as remotes is easy and straight forward. No need to have a masters degree or be able to understand schmatics to operate the flash. Easy to understand cheet sheet is built right into the back of the flash card. The 800 works in fully automatic mode on the latest digitals like the D300, D90 etc but also works well with older film cameras. For those of us who want to have more control, try full manual mode. We run ours in both TTL and M modes depending on the situation. All things concidered, if you run Nikon equipment, you will not be disappointed in this flash. Great value for the money and many optional accessories are available right here on eBay!Read full review
The Nikon SB-800 flash is the best flash to buy if you have older TTL film bodies (I have an FE2, FA, N8008 & F4), but need a flash for the latest D-SLR's (I have a D700) or the F6. If you have an F3, get a used SB-16A. The older TTL flashes with ISO shoe mounts (I have an SB-16B & SB-24) will not work in TTL mode with new digital cameras, which use the new Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS). The latest top-of-the-line SB-900 flash will not work in TTL mode on older TTL film cameras and does not have a multi-flash terminal. The SB-800 can use the new Advanced Wireless System to control compatible remote flashes, will work with the older SU-4 wireless system and will work with wired remotes using TTL Multi-Flash Sync cords. The SB-800 is actually fairly compact for a top-of-the-line Nikon shoe mount flash. It is smaller than my SB-24 (N8008/F4 era) and quite a bit smaller than the latest SB-900. However, the case for the SB-800 (SS-800) with all the accessories is about the same size as the one for the SB-900 (SS-900). The SS-900 case organizes the flash and accessories better than the SS-800 and is quicker and easier to use. The SB-800 has a unique 5th battery add-on compartment, which gives quicker recycling and more flashes, but is slower for replacing the batteries. An external battery pack, such as the SD-8A, is a better idea for wedding photography. The SB-800 has been discontinued by Nikon, but is still commanding fairly high prices used. If you just want TTL flashes for older film cameras, you could buy several older flashes and TTL cables for less money than an SB-800. If you only have new CLS compatible cameras, the SB-900 will work as well as the SB-800 (but costs more). The SB-800 has slightly more power than the SB-900, but not so much that it is significant. The advantages the SB-800 has over the SB-900 are: smaller size, more power and compatible with more cameras. The advantages the SB-900 has over the SB-800 are: better & much faster controls and interface, slightly larger flash head and Firmware Update capability.Read full review
A while back I decided to move to a Nikon D-80 digital SLR, I had no intention of buying a new flash unit because I already had both an SB-50 and a larger SB-25. Since my AF lenses were compatible with the D-80, I thought that the flash units were also compatible. Wrong! Put an SB-25 or an SB-50 on a D-SLR body and the shutter locks up so it can't be tripped! That lead to a decision to buy a new Speedlight and to eBay since I could not afford new prices. As I read, the SB-800 has some backward compatibility with Nikon film SLR cameras. So that should work with my N-90. I think this was a step in the right direction. I tested out the SB-800 with my D-80 and my 70-210 mm zoom. There is full coverage from 70 mm to 105 mm which is a tad better than what the SB-25 did even if the digital focal length is equivalent to 1 1/2 times that of a film camera. And, for power supply, it uses only 4 AA batteries!Read full review
