Getting paid with PayPal

PayPal is a safe and efficient way to get paid on eBay. In most categories, you’re required to accept PayPal, credit card, or debit card payments. We’ll automatically adjust the payment methods for items in categories that do not accept PayPal.

Accepting PayPal enables buyers to check out via their PayPal account and with credit cards; it also means you and the buyer are covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

How to set up PayPal as a payment method

You need a Paypal account in order to use PayPal to receive payment for eBay sales. If you don’t have an account, we’ll ask you to sign up when you create your first listing.

When you create a listing, select PayPal as a payment method and enter the email address associated with your PayPal account in the Payment options section of the listing form.

You can also set up PayPal as your preferred payment method for all your listings. Select the button below, and then check Tell Buyers that I prefer PayPal payments.

Edit payment preferences - opens in new window or tab

Remember, if you offer PayPal as a payment option on eBay (using either logos or text in the item description), you must accept all forms of PayPal payment, including payments from an existing PayPal account balance, bank account transfers, and credit card payments. You can’t tell buyers that you only accept specific forms of PayPal payment. See the Payment methods policy for more information. When a buyer sends you a payment through PayPal, the money is usually available in your PayPal account right away. However, in some cases, the payment might be “pending” for a few days, or it might be held by PayPal for up to 21 days.

There’s usually a fee for sellers for each payment completed through PayPal. Check with PayPal - opens in new window or tab for current terms and conditions.

Managed payments sellers

For managed payments sellers, we’ll automatically place PayPal as a payment method in your listings; however, if the listing is in a category that doesn't accept PayPal, we’ll remove it as a payment method for your buyers. When a buyer sends you a payment through PayPal, the money is sent to your pending funds and then to your bank account through a daily payout.

Tip
You can check the PayPal account information section in My eBay - opens in new window or tab to see what PayPal account you have linked to your eBay account.
