Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 PCI Sound Card SB0240

Feature rich sound card with tremendous OS support
Bought this for the purpose of giving sound to a Windows 98 gaming pc project, because the onboard audio would not work in Win98, regardless of confirming correct drivers... more frustrating when I confirmed that the onboard audio worked in Windows 2000 and XP on the same build. In any case, I was also hedging my bets because at the time, I was wagering that if it didn't work in there still, I would at least have a fall-back of being able to put it in a newer PC where I could take advantage of Daniel K's driver packs for XP and onwards. While the one I purchased didn't come with it, thankfully Vogons' website has an archive of drivers for all sorts of devices, including an archived ISO of the install CD this card would have come with when new. Long story short, even though the Win98 project was on a VIA KT880 motherboard, the install went flawlessly, and even Doom 2 played correctly on it; DOS era compatibility was another point of concern at first, but I had been prepared for the games I would have cared to spin up on the system. Thankfully, the success of this install meant no worries. The only thing I had to do was make sure the card got the correct IRQ dedicated to it - easy enough in the BIOS I was working with. Another thing is, this sound card can get LOUD. You will definitely want to pair it up with some good speakers... I quickly found out how crap the set I had were with how strong these output. Between the wide OS support (the aformentioned Daniel K drivers even allow this card to work in Windows 10), solid audio quality and versatility, the only reason you shouldn't get one of these, is if you simply don't have a PCI slot you can dedicate to it.

For when you want to step up to a more advanced capture card
Requires more manual tuning than an Elgato, but far, far, FAR more versatile. Reportedly this model of capture box uses the same internal hardware as an Elgato HD 60S, but unlike that unit, the driver and program are far more utilitarian and focused for the job at hand. So I guess it needs a bit more fiddling than an Elgato; but Elgato has become almost insufferable with how much their software and drivers have degraded. The fact that it has so many supported inputs is a huge plus, as was this listing that also made sure to include those analog breakout cables, which are really hard to find by themselves. With this, I can basically capture from everything I have, including my Dreamcast's VGA mode, and even the vga or dvi out from another PC, which opens up how many things I can then capture from. Good stuff!

One of the best examples of the HD-DVD format
As what was possibly one of the big juggernaut releases for the HD-DVD format when the war was still on, Warner had a LOT to live up to with bringing this movie to High Definition, and the HD-DVD format. Today, I can write with confidence, after seeing it in my own eyes, that the format definitely had a lot more going for it than what many would have one believe. I chose to buy it on HD-DVD because even though I now have a working ps3 to play BluRay's and games on, getting it on BD was at minimum $80 with tax, and usually a lot more. And with the 360 HD-DVD drive, I had a lot of incentive to instead save myself a good chunk of cash and get it on HD-DVD instead. I must be truthful. I already loved this series of movies, and while it was already a benchmark for the DVD format. Seeing it now on HD-DVD, it really has made the kind of jump you'd expect to feel from going from a 1950s black and white TV to a 40" high def TV set. You know the guys at Warner that brought this movie to HD did so out of love when you can pause a movie and see the veins and arteries on neo's arms when he's first unplugged, or the pores on Morpheus's head when he offers the red and blue pill. And the audio equally impresses. The catchphrase for HD-DVD was "The look and sound of perfect." It sounds cheesy, but it pretty much sums up the technical quality of this release. The niggling downside with this release compared to the BluRay re-release, is that the Animatrix is in 1080p on the BD set. While there are some on that set of shorts I wouldn't mind seeing in native high definition, that isn't enough for me to go fork over another $40~50 for just that.
