Logical next step, deeper metaphysical realities
I've been reading science fiction for a long time, but I only recently started reading Pohl. A talented writer he is unsurpassed at describing the look, feel, sound and smell of alien races. In Annals, which is book 4 of the series that starts with Gateway, the scope expands considerably into the life of stored intelligence, the line between sentience and life, and many many metaphysical issues that blend physics and philosophy. The science is right, and his conclusions and extrapolations are plausible. But the fiction, the story, the characters, they are compelling. This was a very satisfying read, but I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the series.

Old timers like old timers
I've owned schrade old timer knives for over 30 years. High quality steel, durable retraction, nice balance and feel.

supernatural and violent, but lots and lots of fun
This is the second in a series starring urban wizard Harry Dresden, who is a cross between Philip Marlow, Jim Rockford, and Mandrake the magician. This is noir fiction with a supernatural twist, and the violence is strictly designed for the video game crowd - it is horrible and severe, but the main characters always seem to pull through. Like an adult cartoon, or a first person shooter. This particular instance involves a variety of werewolves, not just different ones, but different kinds. You've got recurring characters - his short kung-fu lady detective, his spirit advisor who lives in a skull, the guy who owns the bar with 13 pillars and lots of wood. The dialogue is silly, but the action is superb. This is a good beach book, you'll read it in a couple of days and start looking for the next one. I would recommend you start with the first one and work your way up.
