Olfa AK-4 Initial Review
In the process of looking for a blade holder that had a non-roll feature, the Olfa AK-4 came up several times. Initially, when I had seen these on the shelves at local stores, two things caused me to dismiss these; first the cost, second the plastic handle looked like it was low grade plastic.
Every review of this tool that I found indicated that this was a high quality tool. On line prices were much lower than the local shops - so time to give it a try.
The handle is not low grade plastic, it is a very dense and strong material. The blade holder operates nicely and has a great grip and prevent the blades from loosening. The feel and balance of the handle is quite good, The balance and weight of this tool had much more impact on the control and feel that I had expected. It is one of those tools that just feel great in the hand, work very well and make difference in the work at hand.
The handle and the safely cap have a 'nub' on their periphery that will keep them from rolling off your bench. The same feature on the cap is one of those little details that make a lot of sense from a usability viewpoint. If you don't snap the safety cap on the back of the handle while in use and place it on your bench instead, it does not make a run for it and start the hide and seek game if it gets bumped.
The Olfa blades are of high quality and have a great edge. Even the supplied blades are provided with a nice storage box.
The cost may be a bit more (on line) or a lot more (if your local stores are like mine) than the other common brands of blade holders and place out the budget range or needs of a casual user. For someone that uses such a tool on a regular basis or just likes to use fine tools, give this serious consideration.
