    Best of The Mechwarrior flicks
This is a review of The movie and not so much about any particular release. The movie was released on VHS tape primarily. The Dvd's are almost nonexistent and the laserdisc's are extremely rare also. Now first off let me say that this is not a great movie. Its not perfect by anymeans but, it does have its charms and the overall effect and atmosphere of the movie works very well. The special effects are a mixed bag but are good overall. The special effects with the Giant robot is very good. The storyline is tripe: The ozone layer is gone and the Earth is baking and while all this is happening a super corperation takes over the earth. Fortunenately The story does not hang on any of these points as they are incidental. If you just think of this as a Post Disater type flick and forget the particulars it works. The story takes place in a world largely depopulated and baking in the sun. The political power is concentrated in an Organisation called Unicom which has ceased world power and has outlawed private use and ownership of computers and robots. There is resistance to the new order though. Mostly its just talk though. Its mostly a passive aggressive type of resistance (pirate TV and radio stations). There is one such pirate TV station sitting out in the wastelands in an abandoned powerstation. The owner plays by the rules in the day time and transmits politcally correct programming but at night he is transmitting Anti Unicom messages. Unknown to him he has a traitor working for him and he and his friends are in grave danger. Unicom has secrets too and one of them is at the abandoned power station. The atmosphere and sense of post apoccolyptic disaster is put across very well. Even though They sit out in a huge installation out in the middle of no-where there is this claustrophobic feel to the flick. The charachters in the flick are believable and the acting is Quite good. Ralph Waite plays the Rebellious TV station owner and Megan Ward plays his niece and does some good acting here as well. The rest of the crew does a fair to good job. The movie is exciting and will keep you in anticipation when the truth of whats going on starts to close in on everyone. This is a good flick all the way around and I reccomend it to anyone who likes good sci fi and or Robot Flicks. Its hard to get a good copy of this movie though! I have it in all 3 formats but its extremely hard to find The laserdisc and almost impossible to find the DVD. Get the VHS tape and if you like it try and get a hold of the laserdisc. The laserdisc looks good even on todays widescrenn LCD screens. About The DVD. It was released in a limited edition compilation by the director that has long since been discontiued. If you can find one grab it!

The Name of The Rose - Great movie from a great Book
This is one of the most unusual stories that I have ever read and was surprised that they made it into a movie. Its not what you would call pop literature and The movie follows the book rather closely. The story take place in northern Italy around the year 1200. The story is about a senior monk and scholar who has been entrusted with the rearing and education of a novice and takes him to a monastery where he has been summoned to investigate the strange goings on there. The matter becomes very complicated and many people have much to hide. The movie has everything going for it. The locations and the filming are excellent. The soundtrack fits perfectly with the locations and the historical times and sets the mood to fit. Such a great story and production should have a great cast.....and it does. Sean Connery, Christian Slater, Michael lonsdale, Ron Perlman, F. Murray Abraham. The acting reflects the quality of the actors here and it is first rate. There have been critics who did not like F. Murray Abrahams acting because they said he was over acting. Those people just did not get it. He was playing a man who was a politically motivated inquisitor and was constantly acting in an insincere fashion. He got that point across to me perfectly. His acting here is brilliant its like a window to the mind and the motivation of the man he is playing. This is one of the greatest fims ever made but its not casual viewing by any means and is not good if your looking for sheer entertainment. I would add that this not for the whole family. There is a sexual scene in here. Its actually Love with a capitol L, and its passionate but its in there and you may want to consider that before you sit the whole family down to watch.

    Not for Kids............About Kids
This is one of the finest and truest movies I have ever seen. It missed its mark because it was often referred to as a kids movie. It is not. It is a film about kids and there's a difference. The movie is told from the perspective of a middle aged man looking back on his childhood. Something no child or teenager could possibly do or apprecciate. Now the story is first rate and it takes place in Oregon in 1959. The Photragraphy is beautiful. The acting is outstanding. River Phoenix and Will Wheaton are in a class by themselves. Not to take anything away from Jerry O'Connell or Corey Feldman who were also excellent. If you are the least bit introspective or old enough to remember the late 50's early 60's and what it was to be a kid back then; Then you should buy this movie I promise you, you wont regret it.
