EMAX Industrial Silent Air 10 HP, 2-Stage, 80-Gallon Vertical Air Compressor
    Mar 04, 2020
BEST VALUE 80 Gallon Vertical Compressor- You'll be HAPPY with it!
I owned an Ingersoll-Rand 7.5 HP, 80 Gallon Tank for 20+ years, but alas, the motor recently toasted itself After looking diligently; though, I have been impressed with the Ingersoll-Rand reliability, EMAX, you won me over on this one. Better value includes, 10HP instead of 7.5, i.e. more air delivery per minute, Overall better looking compressor - V-style with larger fins for cooling, half the operating speed of the current Ingersoll equivalent (1/2 the speed generally equals 1/4 of the wear for any rotating machinery.), and it turns out, substantially quieter operation (from ear-splitting within 15 feet of the Ingersoll to noticeable, but easily- tolerable for the EMAX with it's intake silencer and whatever other sound improvements (such as half the operating speed) they have engineered. Only 2 issues were observed with Installation. 1) Handling: This seems common to all 80 gallon compressors: there's no obvious, easy means of lifting the compressor into place. Removing it from the rugged shipping pallet requires some ingenuity. If a manufacturer would even just mark the center of balance for lifting and indicate which holes in the top mounting plate can be used for lifting lugs that could greatly increase Installation Safety. It would be nice if the Manufacturer included lifting lugs; though, I know it's generally a one time operation. Still - Installation Safety Risks are high with equipment of this nature. No mistakes can be made, moving 800-900 lbs of necessarily top-heavy equipment. 2) Electrical Safety: Emax provides a nice, oversize electric junction box for attaching to shop power. It's refreshingly simpler inside than the Ingersoll was and there's more room for running "uncramped" wiring; however, when I removed the Grounding Hex Bolt from the Junction Box, in order to attach the main shop power grounding wire, it was evident that a GUARANTEED grounding bond was not ensured from the Factory, because the powder-coating on the Junction Box was intact under the Grounding Hex Bolt. It's quite possible that no ground connectivity actually occurs through that Factory "bond". I scraped off the powder-coat (with great difficulty - that powder coat is very strong.) and added a star-washer to the hex bolt nut-side to guarantee a solid equipment safety grounding bond. [If you get one of these EXCELLENT EMAX Compressors - pay attention to this bonding issue. Someone's life may depend on it. Hopefully, EMAX will read this review and make an important change out of the Factory Door.] I turned the EMAX on and the deep, unhurried, muscle-car sound is TOTALLY AWE-INSPIRING - not kidding. Get one and listen to it! It makes you want to plug in every air hose in the County and crank that impact wrench! There is (as expected) some vibration when running. Since it runs half the speed of many, the vibration is at a lower frequency. In the interest of a thorough installation, I had already added rubber vibration pads under the feet, which doesn't hurt. I doubt you'll be disappointed with this EMAX. I'm certainly happy with it! As a bonus, you can take the waferboard/plywood sides that protected it during shipping and build a chicken coup or something like that :). Reliability? Check the Specs! This one should last until I'm 140 years old. If you get one, be sure to list it in your Will to your grandchildren. :) 5 STARS IT IS!
