Microsoft Windows 7 Professional With Service Pack 1 64bit Full Version DVD & PC
    Nov 06, 2015
Improved User Interface but caution going the 64bit version
The most important criteria for me in upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 was that I wanted to continue to use the large library of programs that I was used to, had a large $ invested in, and did not want to have to go through a big learning curve with new products when I was satisfied with my old software. One reason for leaving XP for Windows 7 was that when my Quicken 2014 expires at the end of 2016, later versions of Quicken will not be supported in Windows XP. I had also heard a lot of negative criticism about Windows 8 and the transition to 7 from XP was more seamless and more compatible with my library of current applications. I had to give up Outlook Express mail but found that Office Outlook 2003 worked just as well after getting used to. I am strongly into genealogy and digital photography. In the former, I do a lot of scanning of old family photographs from the mid to late 1800s. Most need contrast enhancement, artifact removal, touch up, cropping, and flexibility of making reduced resolution copies and variable compression ratio to send over the internet as e-mail attachments. The combination of tools that has done this job for me well has been Macrografx Picture Publisher 7 and 10 with a Mustek 1200 UB Plus flatbed scanner. The scanner was operated within the Picture Publisher program and the results of the scanned image directly imported into the program for editing before saving. Now I am having to give up these two wonderful tools after installing Windows 7 (except I am keeping an extra computer with Windows XP just to keep alive this old tools). Now, there are no drivers in Windows 7 that support Mustek 1200 UP+ so I had to give it up in lieu of using the scanning function of my new Epson WF-7520 all in one. The scanner does not interface directly with Picture Publisher, but instead stores the photo in memory which can then be accessed by Picture Publisher in a two-step process. Not as sweet and neat as before, but doable in Windows XP. Now after installing Windows 7, I learn that the 64bit version does not support Picture Publisher. Now I have discovered a capable (but not as powerful) photo editor comes with Office 2003 called Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I am still in the process of learning to use this tool and so far it appears that I can crop and make contrast enhancements...although not with the level of complete flexibility and total control as Micrografx Picture Publisher. Also, I have found some Corel photo editing tools (Aftershot, etc) which look promising but have their own "learning curve" to adapt to. My advice is "don't throw away that old computer with Windows XP and some of the wonder tools that it supported when you go to Windows 7 or later.
