    Alinco DR-605 VHF/UHF FM Transceiver 2 Meter And 440mhz 70cm

    Used Alinco DR605
First, they're old. If it works still, you've got a good one. I had three criteria for buying another radio. 1. It had to be true dual band, with separate volumes. 2. It had to be able to do cross-band repeat. 3. It had to be affordable. This radio fit those needs. There are many new Chinese dual banders out there, but the cheaper ones lack in dual volume and cross banding capabilities. These Alincos can be had for just over $100.00 now. The Chinese counterparts run $200.00 for the features I want. There are a couple of things I do not like about these Alincos. 1. There is no computer programming software to be found. Although they can clone from one to another. 2. There is only number display. Alpha numeric would be nice, but not that important. 3. The mike buttons are only for DTMF. It does not support direct frequency input from the keypad. also, the extra function buttons do nothing, and cannot be programmed to do anything. Like band switching, power up down, reverse, etc. It does support packet operation. Lastly, the microphones are discontinued. If you buy one without the mike, prepare to pay 70.00 for the only mike available that will work. Or butcher a yaesu mike, add a RJ45 plug to it, and do it yourself. All in all, this radio serves my needs, and is affordable. Rated 50 watts, but I'm getting 55. I bought two more. Plan on keeping one in house for a base. One in my car. One in my work truck. So for just over $300.00, I've got 3 radios.

The most rugged phone I ever owned! All phones should be this tough! One dislike, Ringtone is not loud enough..

    Best radio for the money
I've had a few of these over the years. I've tried others, but always come back to the Cobra 29. Never had one with a night watch that worked, but I drive during the day. I like the Weather Radio function, but NOT the alarm that goes off even when the power is off. Very loud! And a pain if you're sleeping! I suggest rigging it to a switched circuit that is dead when you turn off the vehicle. They are highly modifiable, take easily to power mikes, and can be fixed easily by a good tech. They will last a long time if you take a little care of it!
