Hoping for more intense color

I was excited to get these blocks, I thought that the colors would be more intense. The blocks break easily, (no big Deal). I guess I was expecting more vibrant color. I wanted to use these on cotton for a quilt top, but just couldn't get the colors that I wanted. Perhaps I was doing something wrong. Maybe if you lay down a base coat of white and then proceed with the color it will look better. I was testing on white 100 % cotton, so I didn't think it was necessary to lay down a base coat of white paint. Maybe I just need more practice time. I think I thought they would be more like a textile paint in chalk form.
