Royall Trifonium All Mahogany Tricone Resonator with Case
    Aug 30, 2017
One of the best wood tricone guitars
I own 2 of these now. 1 Republic maple body and 1 Royall mahogany body tricone. They both come out of the same factory. After playing the maple for three months I knew I had to have another. I sold my National Delphi to fund a couple more. The Royall definitely has better appointments IE diamond inlays, headstock overlay, and nicer looking badge. Otherwise the same guitar. I find the mahogany to be a bit louder with a little more bass, but less note clarity. The mahogany is the first Tricone I feel really pulls open d off. Most don't have enough kick in the bass (well my Nrp baritone does). I've played many a National m1 tricone, and truly prefer these. They are constructed with a metal pan versus the wood pan in a National, and I think it just adds a growl that's missing from the m1. I actually prefer the narrower frets on these I think it produces a more concise note. The neck is 1mm skinnier at the 12th fret, which I find more comfortable especially with bar chords. Check out WesleyD and the Junkyard Dogs on soundcloud for samples of the maple tricone. Amazing grace and forest are played on it.
