Warship Observer likely has the world's most comprehensive inventory of Jane's Fighting Ships. Other naval almanacs and books on naval matters are carried as well. Every book is examined for merits and faults. Minor repairs are often made. Such commonly include cleaning the covers, archival taping of tears and PVA gluing of loose elements. Many older editions have structural issues. Conventional wisdom on the maintenance of antique books is to do only what is absolutely necessary. Few of these books are worthy of that kind of reverence. An 1898 edition will be left alone as long as it has some structural integrity. Later editions are more likely to rehabilitated. If it is particularly tricky, a professional bookbinder is used. For the most part, in-house skills are sufficient to replace hinges and secure loose pages. The terms rare or scarce are overused by some sellers. There is no JFS printed after 1940 that is rare or scarce.
