Britten - War Requiem (DVD, 2007)

Historical and superb.

An historic performance of the highest quality, of this masterpiece. But still, the best recorded performance is the original conducted by Britten himself. Both recordings are old. But the quality of the music and the performances is such that state-of-the -art audio is unnecessary to appreciate and enjoy this great work.

A big disappointment !

I wanted to say something positive about this recording. However, frankly, this is music to put you to sleep. I realize that these recordings are taken from "live" concerts. But, despite the resumes of the hornists involved, the playing is often sloppy. Missed notes and poor technique occurs far too often. Those are characteristics which regular critics of past Philharmonic concerts have mentioned. As for the musicianship; it's difficult to judge considering the uninspiring music being played.

Disappointed

I realize that Mr. Fuchs is an esteemed violinist with a great resume. But this concert reveals intonation slips and strange rhythmic and tempo variations. Despite his reputation, I don't place him among my favored fiddlers; there are simply several who sound better to my ears. .. including his sister..a great violist.
