R60/2 BMW sidecar motorcycle
7 of 7 found this helpful The R60/2 is the classic sidecar machine. The frame, engine and drive train are designed and built with this in mind. These BMWs were 6volt systems with a magneto for the engine system. If your battery was dead, you can run the vehicle
Strengths
1. These were built as good as or better than cars of the day. They have drive shafts and could be run hundreds of thousands of miles reliably. They could be customized. They are a very comfortable cross-country machine.
2. These bikes were quiet.
3. These could be ridden year round. I have ridden these in 20 below temps (snow and ice with a sidecar) and 100+ degree weather. The bike never faltered. I have driven them cross country and they are reliable.
4. It is economical to drive.
5. parts are still available and many places do maintenance and repair on them.
Weaknesses:
1. The brakes are weak by modern standards but adequate for the day. Today we have disk brakes which are much more effective.
2. The electrical system was 6 volts and the lights were weak. There are 12 volt upgrades which allow the use of halogen bulbs.
3. Horsepower is low but it is rpm/torqued for sidecar use.
Overall, this is an old bike and does not compete well with modern BMWs for power speed and agility. It is perfect for what it was designed for. The are many of these bikes that are still daily riders. Its value now continues to go up. Many parts are still available. It still a unique bike to ride and simple to maintain. It could be considered an engineering treasure in it design.
I bought this one to put a 1952 BMW sidecar on it and ride it.
