Pentax Optio S40
Now, before any camera experts start to dismantle this review, I am not jusding this camera against the mythical 'perfect' digital camera, I am basing this review on a pocket point-and-shoot camera and only rating it on features and expectations that are reasonable for this class of camera. Most professional reviews rate cameras on a range of features, image quality being only about 30 or so percent of the total. I for one think image quality is the most important feature of a camera, not it's looks, weight, or any other feature. That being said, this camera provides excellent image quality for a point and shoot, and a slew of other features that are useful and add to the enjoyment of using the camera. In automatic (green smiley face) mode, the camera takes more than acceptable pictures. But if you take a little time to do some set up, the camera can really produce excellent images. The preset white balance settings are acceptable and the custom setting usually nails the balance the first time. The camera does take some time between shots, but if you are looking to record action with a point and shoot, then switch to video camera mode and capture the video. This is not a professional camera, it is a great camera to take with you for capturing everyday moments, party events, a 'times of your life' camera. And if you work with it, you can get some spectacular results. It is not a Hasselblad large format with all the accessories, so don't expect it to produce images like one. It is lightweight, the metal housing can take some abuse, the lens retracts fully into the body, and it is not too much of a battery hog, comparitavely. Video clips limited in length only to the size of your storage card, and they turn out OK (with sound, even). It is not a professional-grade digital video camera, but it does a good job. I downgraded from a higher megapixel Vivitar because the color representation was flat and the depth of field with the Vivitar lens was shallow. This camera produces rich color, with enough color depth to allow some tweaking from within Photoshop that doesn't end up looking fake. The Pentax optics give more depth and atmosphere to the images. All in all, I still use my Canon 35mm camera for the high-level shots I take, but I find I use this Pentax more than any other digital I have ever owned, because it produces what I expect and more, without problems or hassle. I bought several of these cameras, and my 6 and 7 year old daughters are taking fine pictures with theirs, it is not hard to use and even on the most automatic settings the pictures are good. If a 6 year old can consistantly get good images from this camera, almost anybody can. While I would shop around for other options at the full retail price of this camera, for the prices these are now selling for, I would not hesitate to buy one.

DVP642 - the all purpose DVD player
This is one exceptional DVD player. It has been on the market for quite some time now, earning the title 'old and venerable' on many sites, and for good reason. With only a few exceptions, this player will play everything you can throw at it. VCD, MP3 DVD, DivX, photo CD, hybrid CD, any format of recordable, plays without a hitch. The remote is not as intuitive as some, but it is easy enough to get used to. The output is exceptional. The unit is durable, with few complaints about repairs or breakdowns. It is slim and physically attractive, has enough on-unit controls to allow you to operate the device without the remote. It is quiet and relatively cool running - it does not draw attention to itself in enclosed areas like entertainment centers. It is priced more reasonably than a whole lot of other units that won't perform half as well or play half as much. This is a universally highly regarded player that will handle the playback requirements of all but the most advanced enthusiasts, and won't break the bank while doing it. It is difficult if not impossible to come up with any real complaints about this unit, especially when considering it in the context of the other players in it's price range.

SCP 8400 Sprint
This is a solid phone that lives up to the expectations of those who have owned Sanyo SCP phones in the past. This review will not focus on the 'toy' features of the phone, but on what really matters - signal quality and reception, sound quality, usability and data services. There is little surprise in the design of this phone. It is a mid-sized flip that is not particularly thin, the housing is lightweight but not flimsy, the hinges seem strong. A 2 inch diagonal 65000 color screen inside, and a smaller postage-stamp screen on the lid, are common features of this type of phone, and the Sanyo displays are clear, bright, but not exceptional. Where this phone shines is in voice quality and reception. Like the other SCP phones I have owned, this phone gets signal places where most other Sprint phones do not, and voice quality is clear at 1 bar as it is at 5. It is a bluetooth device, with several profiles for hands-free, headset, even data transfer. This is old hat for most carriers, but a novelty for Sprint. Bluetooth pairing and functionality are excellent. Sanyo has provided some customizing features for the phone, both hard and soft. The facemasks allow you to add accents to the lid of the phone, while the themes feature allows you to customize display and sounds. Not as customizable as a 5 year old Nokia, but still something new for Sprint customers. The camera is usable, the flash is functional, but pictures and video are not exceptional (not bad, just not exceptional). The EV-DO PowerVision features work as advertised, and the phone is a very capable modem in EV-DO service areas (outside of those areas it is adequate, no better or worse than any other carrier's data services). But the available software and apps bundle is one of the most useful I have seen from Sprint. Bottom line, this is a great phone, with adequate 'gizmo' features and acceptable style. It won't be winning any 'style gadget of the week' contests, but for those who care most about how good a phone a cell phone is, and less about how good a camcorder, MP3 player, mobile billboard, movie guide, restaurant finder, or any of those other secondary features, this is one strong phone. And for the rest, it may not be strutting the runway, but it isn't lying in the gutter either, not by a long length.
