Rheem Ruud Protech Defrost Control Board Kit (#47-102685-85)
Aug 03, 2021
Good value, but could be worthless if it's the wrong board -- no manufacturer help on IDing the correct replacement..
Unfortunately, and especially for end users, there are too many versions of this control board to be assured you are purchasing the right one. There's VERY little information on the web, and even Rheem Manufacturing doesn't know which defrost board is the right one. Of course, defrost boards are not a new thing and they should last longer than a year. It's fine to update or improve them, but there has to be a clear upgrade and transition path, The QR code on the board itself doesn't resolve to more than a parts database, but there are NO results returned when scanning for the defrost board. So far the board is working in summer weather, but we will see what happens when it functions as a defrost board and controls that function. As to quality, all of this defrost board's electronics are exposed to ambient weather and insects -- so it's no wonder that the board failed in a year. Most heat pumps have fully enclosed control boards with sealed connectors for wiring and diagnostic LEDs. No so here. The good news is that the boards are relatively inexpensive and simple enough to install (just be sure to take a picture of the wiring and kill the power to both the indoor and outdoor units as the board is at line (240) voltage before doing anything). Also, some versions of the board include sensors; but it's not clear if they must be changed when the board is changed. The manufacturer was of no help. Having to guess which board is the right one without dealer or manufacture knowing so is absurd.
Vornado EVDC300 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier
Jan 06, 2021
Expensive humidifier; significant design flaws. Not recommended.
This is an expensive humidifier that performs no better than ones half the price; however, there may be some energy savings that offsets the higher cost. This humidifier is rated to use 8.5 watts where similar models use up to 50. Given that the typical user may use a humidifier for 5-6 months a year, I cannot justify the higher costs. On the negative side: -- The eco branded humidifier is made of mostly non-recyclable hard plastics, including ABS which may contain carcinogenic components. It's not clear if these components off-gas into your air or water, but between water (which is an effective solvent) and air moving through the humidifier, there is some risk you should evaluate before purchasing this humidifier. -- The small wick / filter is expensive at about $7-10 each. Since these act as a basic air filter and collect minerals in your water, they need frequent replacements. If you have soft water, the salt used in the softening process can foul the wicks even faster. Moreover, since the wick is always wet, it can be a breeding ground for molds and other undesirable things. Keep in mind that these may not be filtered out of the air blowing through the humidifier. Also, it's not clear what the wicks / filters are made from. -- The water tank design is a complete failure. Based on the numerous warnings in the manual and on the tank itself, it's clear this is well known by the manufacturer. It is essential that you exercise GREAT CARE when removing or positioning the water tank into the humidifier. It must be removed or inserted without any twisting or you risk a leak. In addition, the gasket used to seal the lid to the tank is cheap, poorly attached, and can wear out or become misaligned and cause a leak. BE SURE you read and understand the direction and follow them precisely when doing anything with the water tank. If you don't you risk a significant leak and resulting property damage. This is a mortal design flaw and must be addressed by the manufacturer. -- The small, easy-to-lose or misplace user manual is well written; however, it's printed in an additional language we don't understand, It's not printed on recycled paper, and the glossy paper it is printed on is not recyclable where we live. This is odd given this is marketed as an eco product. -- There are no QR codes on the humidifier to help locate user manuals and troubleshooting materials on the internet. -- There are no indications that the humidifier can be repaired, so one must assume that it's a disposable appliance. Very unfortunate for an eco-marketed product. -- The lighting is supposed to be controlled by a dimming light sensor. The sensor is either defective or not working properly as the light doesn't dim on our humidifier. There is no adjustment, calibration, or means to turn the light off (other than by turning the humidifier off or unplugging it). The light shines brightly through the water tank which is a needless feature. There should be a better dimmer, an adjustable dimmer, or a means to disable the light entirely without turning the humidifier off. This is especially important if you use this humidifier in your bedroom and don't want the added light. It could be a benefit / replacement for a night light -- it's that bright. -- The fan is cheap, poorly designed. very loud when on all but the lowest speed, and vibrates. The fan should be redesigned and engineered so that it is fully balanced to eliminate vibration and minimizes air whooshing noise. If you like loud white noise sounds, then this could be a benefit. -- The eco mode is not the default mode and must be manually selected each time the power is turned on. Odd for a product marketed as an eco product. -- The only way to access the lowest, quietest fan speeds is by accessing the eco mode. -- The three manual fan speeds do not modulate; the eco mode modulates the fan speed based on the difference between measured and desired humidity levels. -- The built-in humidistat measures humidity between 5 to 10 percent higher than the actual room humidity we measure with a calibrated humidistat. There is no way to calibrate the humidifier's humidistat. -- Even worse, the humidistat is apparently located too close the the air exhaust which causes it to sense the exhaust humidity and short cycle. This results in frequent start and stop cycles and is yet another fatal design flaw. -- The humidity level adjusts only in 5 percent increments and includes a constant-on mode. This can be dangerous in cold climates as it can cause condensation. On the positive side: -- The humidifier emits no white dust. -- The air emitted from the humidifier is chilled during the evaporation process, so this can act as a swamp cooler in hot and very dry climates. -- When using the eco mode, the lowest fan speed is quiet but with minimal humidification. -- The water tank is easier to clean than most humidifiers, but its design flaws (see above) far outweigh this benefit.
Kidde Smart Detection Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector (P4010ACSCOAQWF)
Mar 26, 2024
Very easy to install -- works well; but be sure you have space in your junction box for the hub,
This is one of the few "internet of things" or connected devices that really makes sense. For one, it's a multiple function device. Fire and smoke alarm; carbon monoxide detector, and an indoor air quality monitor. The air monitor keeps separate temperature, humidity, and air quality records and reports the health of each in traffic-light style (green, yellow, red), Very helpful and suggests ways to improve if needed. All of the functions report on line and can be accessed from an app on a phone or tablet. Alarms are reported in real time to your devices so you can be aware of an event if you are not home. You can share the device access with friends or family members, so this is a great tool for remote monitoring of relatives or friends. It can work in the reverse, too -- so I am keeping track of my house and my elderly parents house in one app. Peace of mind for me. Likewise a good choice for a second home or even an RV where remote monitoring is desirable.. Installation is simple with clear, in-app directions; however, the alarm-detector only uses 2.4 band WiFi, so if the phone or tablet you are using to install the device is on a different Wifi band, you will need to change it to 2.4 for fastest results. The device connected to our WiFi easily and then updated its firmware. It reported temperature and humidity right away but takes four days to calibrate the volatile organics component of the air quality. Once that was done, everything appeared in a well-designed, easy-to-use app, The devices can be interconnected throughout one location so that if an event is detected at one station, the others will sound. The wiring harness was the same as a 20-year old detector I replaced, so there was no need to change it. The battery is internal and lasts 10 years. It cannot be replaced, so the entire device must be replaced when it's 10 years have elapsed. The app keeps track and reminds you when that point comes near. Perhaps the best feature is the WiFi hush option -- no need to manually hush the detector, although that option is available too, Well engineered -- the LED light on the detector slowly fades to off when night (darkness) is detected so one fewer bright LED light to keep you awake. The LED fades back to life when ambient light is detected. Multiple variants that include any of the three features -- smoke and fire, carbon monoxide, and indoor air quality. The IAQ monitor is very sensitive and accurate -- it reported very bad indoor air after I cooked dinner -- so if you are not the best cook or don't use the ventilation fans, be prepared for that notice. On-line records are kept in the cloud for free. There is an option for a monthly fee, but I haven't yet investigated whether it's worthwhile. One factor to consider: There is a rather large hub on the back side of the detector that needs to be accommodated in your junction box. If your box is crowded with wires or is not deep enough, you may not be able to install the detector. Be sure to measure before ordering. Note: requires 120 volts to work (the battery is for backup) and WiFi for monitoring and reporting. It is considerably more expensive than an ordinary smoke alarm, but adding in all of the features and components makes it a good value. What's more, the remote monitoring is very beneficial with everything consolidated into one app. The instruction booklet is very detailed and gives clear directions on where to install the detectors. I think it's a good idea to review this section and be sure your alarms are properly positioned and that you have them in all of the recommended locations. This is especially important in older homes or where building codes have been updated.
