Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, with Recipes
    Apr 27, 2019
    don't bother getting this book.
I first was recommended by many many people to get "What's Cooking in KY", which I did, and found to be full of processed modern foods and nothing that dated to before around 1960. I expressed that dismay and that I was looking for more of the TRADITIONAL recipes and was directed to get "Victuals", which I did. First of all, the photography in Victuals is completely colorless and ugly. The whole palette seems to be gray, tan, black, and olive drab green. You don't even get a picture of red strawberries in this book - nope, the only strawberries they show are white. I don't know who thinks they're being "artistic," but ugly is ugly. Second, the book is a bit too high falutin. It's full of lawyers etc. from big cities etc. who quit their jobs and move to appalachia to open appalachian restaurants to create "inspired cuisine". People with master's degrees from a thousand miles away who decide to buy some desperate Appalachian family's 4 generation farm and farm it, though they know zero about farming or appalachia. Etc. The cuisine was fusion. They were putting miso paste etc in the food. Just no. So despite now having gotten TWO appalachian cookbooks people raved up and down about, I'm still on my search for an appalachian cookbook that is FULL of the recipes people actually ate in the 1700s , 1800s, and early 1900s through the Depression. Stuff people did to keep their company store bill low and to minimize how much they had to pack home on a mountain trail to feed a (usually large) family. It will need to be based on ingredients people could grow, raise, forage, or hunt, in those time periods, and recipes the people actually were making for generations, based on the traditions they came from. This book "Victuals" was disappointing in that it was long on talk and short on recipes and had too much of a highbrow feel and like I said, really depressing colorless photography.

    so-so
The connector doesn't connect securely to the laptop, it comes out easily and breaks power connection easily. For the price it does the job. But if there is one that has a better more compatible connector, it would be better.
