Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS, 2009)
    Apr 09, 2024
    Great graphics and sound
Oh, time to write an actual review. First thing first, somehow, this is a DS game (and not even a DSi game in disguise) with graphics that are even more robust than Persona Q, a 3DS game. I am shocked, this could pass as a GameCube or even a Wii game if it ran at a higher resolution. There is a game by the same name on the Wii, but it is not at all the same game. The story is very compelling. It is a simple storyline, but it is a fun and enjoyable one nonetheless. Basically there are six Snow Spirits responsible for making Snow in Vancouver, Winter Island, and Dream Island. Eggman and Bowser kidnap them so they can host their own Winter Olympics, presumably in either Eggmanland or Koopa Castle. Mario and Sonic then recruit a bunch of team members to help them save the Snow Spirits. The gameplay... The very short review would be touch-controlled hockey sucks! So anyway, this game is a lot of fun, if you can get over just how bad touch-controlled hockey in particular is. In theory, it wouldn't be so bad, as using the touch screen allows for precise passing of the puck. In practice, hockey (especially Fever Hockey) is impossible to control as you not only move by holding down where you are moving to on the touchscreen, but have to also tap and swipe to either pass or shoot the puck. The rest of the sports aren't perfect as they are either comically easy (Speed Skating), or have their own special learning curve. The good majority of them is very fun. Ski Jumping, Cross-country Skiing, and especially most of what is on Dream Island is really fun. The music is amazing. Seriously, at least take some time to enjoy the amazing soundtrack.
