Victim of the Volume Wars
I have been a fan of Collective Soul for a long time. I really like the band's music. I am terribly disappointed by the treatment of their music on this compact disc. The mastering was done with a brick wall limiter that was set to heavy compression. The sound is so dense that it just sounds like noise. I pulled it into a computer program that displays the waveform and most of the songs were a solid mass of waves at maximum amplitude. Unfortunately I cannot enjoy the music because the recording just sounds horrible. It is a terrible trend in music these days that they maximize the volume at the recording source instead of taking advantage of the clarity of the digital format. I will be searching for this album on a vinyl edition because, in my experience, the volume war problem is a rare occurrence in vinyl. My review is not a reflection on the music itself because the mix made it unpalatable. I still like Collective Soul.

Dragons made great music off the beaten path.
1 of 1 found this helpful I have been listening to the Dragons' BFI album over the last three weeks. The music they played really doesn't conform to any particular category. I guess surf music is the basic style, but they have a more polished sound, and more early seventies in style than something like Dick Dale. The musicianship is top notch. The recording was done impeccably. The liner notes are really interesting and set the tone for the songs. I originally purchased it because Daryl Dragon, of the Captain And Tennille, is one of my favorite keyboard players and arrangers. Of the three Dragon brothers, he seems to have had the smallest part in this album's creation, but I can hear the attention to detail that later played in the Captain And Tennille's recordings. From the liner notes, it's clear a strong musical background runs in the family, and the album backs that up solidly. Doug and Dennis Dragon were the two prominently featured musicians on this album. There's not a bad tone, wrong chord, or anything else shoddy in the production. The music itself is certainly of high quality, though its style is so unique, that I'd have a hard time saying what musical genre it fits. It sounds to me like the background singers were the same girls who sang on Dark Side Of The Moon, Exile On Main Street, and other classic albums of the period. I love their voices, and the particular harmonic style of their singing makes me think they're the same girls from the other albums. I wish the photos were larger, and showed more detail. I find the whole thing fascinating. I really don't know who I'd recommend this to, the word unique really is the bottom line. I chose to risk the price of the album on the basis of Daryl Dragon's name, and I believe I got my money's worth. It's like nothing else I've ever heard. I've been listening to it a lot lately and have not grown weary. Good stuff, Maynard!
