CLEARANCE: New, Black Amazon Echo Plus - 1st Gen, Built-in Smart Home Hub
    Oct 16, 2019
The previous Plus is a great bargain
With the release of Amazon's second version of the Echo Plus, the cost has gone up to $220. That makes this previous version something of a real bargain at less than $70. That means that it is price competitive with the third generation Echo Dot. While some of the features of the Echo Plus are now available on the Echo Dot -- such as being able to attach an external speaker -- there are two major and one more minor advantages that the Plus offers. The first major advantage is that the Plus has a much better speaker than the Dot. It's ideal for situations such as the kitchen, where it would be inconvenient for most users to add a separate speaker. The second major advantage is that the Plus includes the ability to link into something called "Zigbee networks". This is a low-power, narrow range (10m) network that is used to power many home automation systems. A good example of these systems is the IKEA Tradfri range. At the moment Tradfri is a little limited in Australia, most to lights, but will soon expand into power plugs, and even remote controlled blinds. Zigbee lights that can be controlled from the Echo Plus cost as littles as $12 for LEDs, much less than competing systems such as the Philips Hue range. That said, Philips Hue is also Zigbee, which means the Echo Plus can control Hue lights, without the need to use a bridge. The minor advantage of the Plus is that it has a very good system for picking up and responding to vocal commands, including the "wake word", "Alexa". It is literally possible to just whisper to it across the room, and it will pick up your voice. While there is some debate about the aesthetics of the Plus, I find the black version to be very attractive, and not out of place in a modern kitchen or living room.

    Draytek Vigor2912 Dual WAN & 4 x LAN & 16 x VPN Tunnel Router DV2912

Great alternative for NBN HFC connection
While it is now outdated, this has turned out to be a very good product. Here in Australia much of our internet connectivity is delivered via the National Broadband Network (NBN), and those of us in some urban areas receive this service via "HFC" -- hybrid fibre cable. This is basically the old cable TV system revved up with additional repeaters. It's not too bad, though it is sensitive to net usage by all users on a single trunk line -- whenever the footy is on, it's difficult to stream a movie. One aspect of HFC the providers don't talk about is that you are supplied with a modem, and all you need to connect is really just a router. It's a good way to save a bit of money, or upgrade to a better device. This Draytek enables you to not only provide additional security, but with a bit of effort, you end up with a "fallover" system, so that when the NBN goes down (which it does two or three times a year) the system switches to a 3G wireless modem connection instead.
AKG K52 Closed-Back Headphones for Live Sound Monitoring & Recording Studios

Very good for transcription and video editing
I bought the AKG K52s because I need to do quite a bit of audio transcription combined with video editing. My previous headphones, Logitech UEs, fell apart -- after 10 years of use. I wanted a "neutral", studio-style headphone, because I frequently encountered a situation where I could not understand a word or phrase I needed to transcribe, and I realise the "bass boost" on most headphones were contributing this this problem. For the price, the K52s are remarkable. The ear cups are almost comically large (I have fairly small ears), but they are very comfortable, and the build quality seems high. The sound, for transcribing and video editing, if very, very good. I also like using them for watching video shows on an iPad. I'm not so keen on them for music, but I didn't buy them for that purpose. Highly recommended.
