HONDA BOND #4 Gasket Sealer
1 of 1 found this helpful I started using YAMABOND #4 in 1970 while working for a local Yamaha dealer and found that HONDABOND #4 was identical while touring Big Dog Motorcycles when the company I was working for was considering fabricating frames for Big Dog. These two sealers were formulated to seal aluminum motorcycle engine crankcases that lack any type of gasketing. I found both branded compounds to be superior to any other sealers when assembling the magnesium Volkswagen cases that mate together with only a sealer. I purchased a tube of Yamabond two weeks ago and was disappointed to find that the formula had been changed to a silicone based sealer which in my opinion produces a substandard, limited lifespan seal. I quickly order this Hondabond with hopes that Honda had not made the same mistake. I was glad to find that Honda hsa retained the same solvent based compound that has been my go to for the past fifty years.
I find that the best results are obtained either with a gasket or without if the mating surfaces are completely flat and have been cleaned with a solvent such as lacquer thinner, MEK, or acetone. The best method for removing this sealer is by scraping with a single edged razor blade followed by wiping with a rag wetted with lacquer thinner until all traces have been removed. Removal is a chore but that is what we are looking for, something that adheres.
