If you want more than a 3X zoom Point & Shoot camera...
46 of 48 found this helpful I personally use a Nikon D2x and a Nikon D200. I would never use this type of camera Myself. That being said....I bought The Sony DSC-H5/B for my girl friend. After reading several reviews through a google search, this seemed like the best choice for an Ultra Zoom camera. The priority for her was User Friendly, and the ability to have a large zoom range without changing lens. I dont like the Swing out monitor on the back of the Canon, even though it takes great fotos. I did`nt care for the Nikon point & shoot either. It came down to the Panasonic, Olympus, or the Sony. The Olympus does not have the image stabilizer where the sony did. And at long focal ranges, it really is needed for a hand held camera. The Panasonic has a few issues with foto quality, and that is why you buy a camera... To take fotos. I spent a day testing all 3 cameras, and overall the sony came out on top. And as a added bonus, the sony has that large 3 inch LCD monitor. The only fualt i could find with the Sony is the fact it uses AA batteries, I prefer Li-ion. However i typically take 200-300 fotos in a given day, so for the average user this would not be an issue. If you want more than your basic 3X Zoom Point & Shot, and are not ready to move up to a high dollar digital SLR, than this is the camera for you. It is well worth the extra money over the smaller point & shoot cameras. I have been shooting Pro and Semi-Pro for over 33 years, and i can honestly say that this is a great camera for the money.

Great improvement over the first version which was allready a good lens. A+
8 of 8 found this helpful WOW ! I have been waiting YEARS for this lens....
Having owned the older "D" version 80-400mm for many years, this is what I have been waiting for. The older version was a great piece of glass except for the slow focus. Now that the lens has it`s own focus motor it is super fast and accurate. One nice added feature is they added a lock at 80mm to keep the lens from creeping out while on the move.
As of this writing I just returned from the Ballestas Island national marine reserve off the coast of Peru in South America. You are not allowed to board the island so all photos must be done from your boat in choppy waters with 3-4 foot swells. Two years ago with the older "D" lens 3 or 4 out of every 10 were print quality due to the slow focus in the rough moving waters. This year armed with the new model lens it was 9 out of 10 and at least 70% gallery quality. In fact some of these photos will be seen next year in a gallery in Los Angeles.
When out of the studio I do 90% of my work hand held and this lens was no issue for me and I have to admit I have not yet used this lens in a tripod, but Im sure it will preform great. Just remember to turn off the VR when using in a tripod. For a smaller person this might be a bit much for hand held shooting. Overall this is a high quality Pro level lens except for one thing. The Lens collar/foot for mounting to a tripod is a piece of garbage. Even worse than the first version. Nikon, What were you thinking ? SHAME ON YOU ! Before I ever took this lens out of the studio I put on the Really Right Stuff LC-A13 Package, Collar and foot to replace the junk it was shipped with. This is why I only gave 4/5 stars on Value for money. I know a lot of people have complained about the near $3,000.00 cost of this lens, but for me it was worth the wait and worth every dime and only 1/3 the cost of my 400mm f 2.8 and a heck of a lot lighter.
PLUSES
* Tack Sharp
* Fast & Accurate focus
* Excellent build quality
* Creep lock at 80mm
MINUSES
* Lens Collar/Foot
