Aimee Mann-Live at st Anne's Warehouse
Having been an Aimee Mann fan for many years, I was very pleased when I discovered she had made a live DVD, and that a copy of it was advertised on eBay. I had seen her live once before and so knew that she was not very animated when she performs on stage. This doesn't bother me at all, because she channels all her attention on the powerful lyrics that all her songs contain.
You do find yourself strangely mesmerised by her, as she runs through songs from Sugarcoated, a rock orientated track with a great guitar solo, to slow ballards like Invisible Ink, which she handles superbly. Red Vines, Humpty Dumpty and Amateur are more of my favorites, but in honesty I loved all the tracks. If I had one complaint it was that I could have done without the "f" word cropping up on the odd occasion. I did know this might happen as it has done on her second album "I'm With Stupid", and funnily enough that's the only swear word she ever seems to use. This makes it awkward with two young daughters in the family who love listening to her, I wish she wouldn't do it.
The camara work on the DVD is very polished as is the sound recording, but the great strength of Aimee Mann is her brilliant lyrics, nuggets of real emotion wrapped up with spooky symbolism. If you love intelligent song writing with good musicians to back it up, you will get something good for the soul out of listening to her. If you decide to give this DVD a try you also get a CD included which has tracks taken from a tour in 2004, another good reason why this package is worth having. To those not familiar with her work - even with her minor hit 'Stupid Thing', give her time, a good few listenings, to get into your head. If you do, it will have a long lasting effect on you, not like the "one hear like three hear loath" music prevelant on radios and televisions. So go on bear your soul, find some parallels with your own messed up life, and enjoy them! Treebod.
