Walthers HO Thrall Stand Alone Double Stack Container Car
The model is from Walthers line of products from the early 1990s. The model is accurate to the prototype however a lot of the detail is moulded on like the grab irons or on the heavy side such as the uprights and the stirrups below them. If the model was being produced today then a lot of those items would be separately applied parts. In saying so the newer model would be more expensive in comparison and the detail of the Walther's model was acceptable. At the time, if higher fidelity was needed, a modeller carefully carved off the moulded features and replacing them with after market parts and carefully matched and repainted those areas. This is what I intend to do and that will produce a model that will fit in with the later manufactured products. Model Railroading Magazine produced a series of articles in the mid 90's on how to do this. Access to these articles use to be possible through the Train Life website.

Older but still current model
It is a really nice and accurate model. Though older than some of the more recent and detailed models that recent models that I have either purchase or modified it will fit right in with a little weathering.

Kato SD45
Kato Locomotives have a really good motor and performance. When this locomotive and its sister SD40 were first produced in the early to mid nineties (30 years ago now) they were the best HO locomotives on the market because of their performance and detail.
In more recent times other manufacturers have caught up and have surpassed Kato with their own versions of these locomotives particularly in the detail side and also in digital performance (DCC sound and lights etc) which is not surprising when one considers how things have changed in everything over the last 30years (cell phones?). The other side of this development is that you will be paying more for the latest batch of SD45s from other manufacturers.
I have been happy with my other Kato products with a few after market detail parts I can ensure that my Kato SD45 will have enough detail that as it moves around a layout that it will fit in with the newer products that are availalbe
