72' Pullman-Standard Baggage Car Chicago Great Western HO scale

    Best Bang for the Buck
You just can't beat the line of Walthers Proto or even pre-Proto passenger cars (that's a lot of "p"s). Unless you fall victim to one of the many ebay dealers who grossly overprice their stuff in these Bui-it-Now scams, these are the best quality, most realistic HO scale passenger cars available for the money. Sure, Broadway Ltd and Rapido make great passenger cars too, but they can be quite a bit more expensive than the Walther's cars. This particular model is of a somewhat generic lightweight smooth-sided baggage car built by Pullman Standard in the late 1940's through the mid 1950's. It is prototypically-correct or darn close to it for hundreds of these cars used by railroads all across the US and Canada. The model captures well the dimensions, look and features of the prototype. It ran smoothly and without problems right from the box. The wheels all checked-out to the NMRA standard and other than changing the couplers from the factory plastic to real Kadee metal couplers, it was good to go right from the box. I highly recommend.

TSUNAMI: Best Bang for the Buck
If you ever want to instigate a raucous debate at the model train club, just get a few members talking about why they favor one decoder over another. The opinions and technical jargon will fly and friendships will be tested. But, when it comes to bang for the buck, it is difficult to make a case against the Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoder. Tsunami in general offers modelers the best value, sound quality and functionality for the cost, and the AT-1000 is no exception. Tsunami has a highly-advanced motor control capability and can generate excellent sound quality through the many configurable options for the modeler. But despite their technical sophistication, you don't have to be a technical genius to understand how to optimize them for your specific application. Soundtraxx has excellent, easy-to-read on-line user manuals making it quite easy to understand Tsunami capabilities. The typical modeler can learn quickly how to program Tsunami on a dedicated programming track using the freeware application DECODER PRO from JMRI. There seem to be endless comparisons of Tsunami with the ESU LOKSound decoder. LOKSound is indeed an incredibly sophisticated decoder with configurable capabilities beyond that of Tsunami. But LOKSound is an intricately complicated decoder that is difficult for the average Joe to understand and, for many of us Joes, simply way more decoder than we need for what we want to accomplish. Properly programming LOKSound requires proprietary ESU computer-interface hardware and even then, it contains a dizzying array of configurable options that will boggle any mind of less than Einsteinian intelligence. LOKSound decoders are ideal for the techno-wizards among us and are capable of great things. But for the rest of us who just want great performance, sound and affordability, there is Tsunami.

Depend on Atlas for Long-Life Reliability
Atlas locomotives as far back as the 1970s have consistently stayed on the top of my list, which is not easy as I am a very demanding, detail-oriented modeler who expects operational reliability on top of accurate, well-detailed models. While not always enjoying the limelight as much as Proto, Kato, and, more recently, Athearn RTR and Genesis, Atlas still engineers and produces excellent locomotive models. They will match Kato and beat both levels of Athearn in smooth and silent motor performance, and pack enough detail right out of the box to be quite satisfying in all situations except a fine-scale modelers' show or contest. Atlas locomotives come from three distinct eras: Yellow Box (70s - 80s), Red Box (90s - early 2000s) and the current Black (or Silver) Box. Current offerings are divided between their top-of-the line Master Series, remake of old favorites Classic series, and the budget-minded Trainman series. Yellow Box models were made for Atlas by both Roco in Austria and by Kato before they began marketing on their own in the US. Red Box models were Atlas' first foray into Chinese manufacturing and, despite the naysayers at the time, the quality and fidelity of Red Box models is excellent even by today's standards. The Red Box six axle GE U-Boats and Dash-7s were good sellers for Atlas and very popular among all levels of modelers. The remain attractive at used prices provided they received reasonable care from prior owners. They still command a higher price than their Athearn counterparts from the same era, but are well-worth it.
