ICM Furnace Speed Control Board ICM281 for Carrier CES0110057-01 CES0110057-02
Oct 18, 2017
Technically better replacement. Minor quality issue on edge contacts.
Used this to replace an HH84AA0016 control board in a Carrier furnace. Works like the original and includes an additional diagnostic LED that the original lacks. The turn off delay is also set via a DIP switch instead of a jumper wire. It was a direct plug-in replacement. No fiddling to connect it or get it to fit. See photo for comparison. Overall components and construction are pretty good. More modern microprocessor than the original. I liked that they made cutouts so that certain high wattage resistors didn't brown the PCB. Only complaint (and why I didn't give it five stars) is that there is an edge connection that had a thick, uneven build up of solder from on the contacts from the wave soldering process used on the board. That area should electroless tinned but then masked prior to wave solder. I wound up touching that up by using a desolder pump to vacuum off the excess solder. I don't know if this is a common problem. Otherwise, quality was good and the delivered price was excellent. Definitely worth 15 minutes of cleaning up the edge connections before installing.
Behlen Brass Lacquer 13 oz.

Goes on smooth, works well, lives up to the recommendations
Used it for protecting the finish on an old school house clock bezel and pendulum, and a little touch up on a brass doorknob that had some of its lacquer worn off. The product is highly rated and recommended on other review sites, and it lived up to expectations. The product worked great. No haze and no problem keeping a 'mirror finish'. I can't comment yet on how long it will keep tarnish away, but having read some other online reviews, I have an expectation that it will be at least several years if not longer. Applying the product itself was straightforward. I follow directions and give a light first coat and then a second after the first has become tacky. (There are some YouTube videos if you search for "Mohawk brass lacquer"). The self-leveling is good. Only advice I really have about applying the product is to pay attention to temperature and avoid trying to apply it when the can or the piece is cold. Avoid closed spaces. The vapors are very strong. For me, I found it best to spray outside and then bring the pieces back inside while they dry. As usual, the quality of the result is proportional to the quality of the preparation. Loss of reflectivity from scratches can be magnified when a clear finish is added on top. I use conventional metal polishes, including using Autosol for heavy tarnish, to polish the brass. But since most metal polishes state that they leave something behind to slow or prevent tarnishing, I follow up polishing by wiping the piece with lacquer thinner / acetone and then polishing/cleaning with automotive rubbing compounds, such as those from Meguiars, which provides a mechanical 'scrub' to strip away any chemical coating that may have been left behind. (Since those products are meant for polishing paint, it's mainly abrasives in solvent bases that evaporate without leaving any residue behind). I then follow with a tag rag to remove any dust. I suspect that anyone that has trouble with hazing or cloudiness of the finish might find the cause is not the lacquer, but perhaps a reaction with anything left behind from using off-the-shelf brass/metal polishes. The other causes could occur if the piece was not stripped of its previous finish and reacted with it, or the product applied too thickly and with insufficient time between coats.

TP-LINK TL-WA850RE N300 Universal Wireless Range Extender.

Good product, comes in multiple hardware versions.
There are three hardware versions of this product. Versions 4, 2, and 1.2. They all look the same. I received version 1.2 of the hardware that lacks some firmware features available on later hardware. I would likely rated this a four based on ease-of-use and performance in my application, taking a point away for the poor location of the ethernet connector. Physical: the unit is lightweight and fairly compact. Depending on what you need to plug in, it may or may not impede using the other socket in a common U.S. wall outlet. The position of the ethernet connector is not ideal, however. If you plug in an ethernet cable, it hangs down and restricts the ability to plug anything except small plugs (like for a table lamp) or special low profile plugs into the other socket. Version details: The latest hardware version is version 4 and version 2 seems well supported. If you go to the manufacturer's support site, the latest firmware update for v1.2 is from 2014, whereas for v2 and v4 hardware, the latest updates are from 2017. Based on the online user guides from the manufacturer, it appears that the v1.2 firmware features are significantly different in the user interface and lack some features for turning the repeater off based on time of day and some other low level settings. I wound up with version 1.2 of the hardware and a unit that lacked a serial number. If this matters to you and the information is not provided in the listing you may want to check or ask the seller about the h/w version and serial number before purchasing. Use and performance: Set up was easy and I didn't need any of the later firmware features that are not available on v1.2. I bought the unit to use as an Ethernet bridge rather than a repeater. The repeater says I'm getting a 40% signal level from my router. Using wireless N I get a 144 Mbps wifi connection. Checking my outside internet access, I get about 1 to 2.5 Mbps drop in download throughput from going through the repeater. Reliability: For my version of the hardware, I've found that the unit keeps the connection although I have on a couple of occassions found the unit blinking in some error mode after a couple of weeks of operation. When this occurred, unplugging and replugging the unit restores operation. Keeping the unit in an accessible location where you can see the status lights is probably a good idea. The newer hardware versions may be better. I don't know. Closing: Overall, the unit was a very good value for what I needed. It has been generally reliable and gives good performance as an Ethernet bridge. While bought it to use as a bridge, as a bonus the unit does boost the signal to areas where I didn't have wifi before - mainly the back yard and in the far corners of my garage.
