Alkali cancelling cooler cakes
This is one of two things required for evaporative coolers. The second is a good sacrifice anode of zinc. These cakes neutralize the alkali in the water, greatly reducing the buildup of crystals on the pads of the evaporative cooler, and help combat the black algae that can get out of control. The alkali combines with the chemical in these cakes and precipitates to the bottom of the water tank, where it can be flushed out. I put in 2 at a time, and use quite a few every season. Keeps the air smelling clean and allows the expensive 1-foot thick pads in the Mastercool units to be used for several years.
