The thinking man's "Allo Allo".
I'm not at all a film buff but I've seen this film twice now on TV and found it riveting hence I bought it.
At times serious without becoming depressing, at others light-hearted but remaining poignant, it's a moving, award-winning tragi-comedy starring and directed by Roberto Benigni who plays an irrepressible, quick-thinking and resourceful individual striving to ensure his son's and wife's survival in a Nazi concentration camp.
Despite the terrors, setbacks and disappointments, he maintains his clowning behaviour and positively cheerful demeanour.
There is a continuous seesawing between horror and hilarity and it was always going to be a challenging subject about which to make a film but was written and performed with so much sensitivity.
It could have gone badly wrong resulting in rejection by, if not direct hostility from critics and the film-going public in general had the balance of the scriptwriting and Benigni's sensitive portrayal of the character not been so carefully maintained.
And what an ending!
