Vintage Pioneer SX-650 Stereo Receiver With Phono Stage

Great old receiver

This is an old Pioneer x 650 receiver which works really well. Cosmetically it needed some TLC, so it has been fixed up, recovered and now looks better. The unit itself has everything except the stereo bulb working. So getting a new one. Reception in my area for radio is not good though with a wired coax connection the signal is acceptable. The radio sound is warm and full, clear voices and music sounds wonderful. Typical of its era. It is what it is still!!! All the controls work and all the finish is in amazing condition for its age. Of course WAT is expected though no obvious marks and cleanes up well. The phono stage was used with an upgraded Rega Planar 3. it didn't sound as good as my new Creek amp though it did sound as good as or better than my old Creek 4040. I love Creek amps and their sound it works for me so my review is biased on this issue. The records sounded clear, warm with a rounded sound to my ears. Easy to listen to. Didn't try a tape deck don't have one, tried a CD player that sounded good as well. Had to buy thinner speaker cable as the connections at the back are sprung clamps. Don't like them much but they do work ok. Need to be carefull with inserting and not catching cables, like usual really. Not a negative point just different from what I am used to. The back was showing its age, though it does all work. It would benefit from some cosmetic attention, but if it not broke don't fix it! All in all, its a good example of a very good receiver and I really enjoy the sound, build quality and how it looks. Each period seems to me to produce different sounding equipment. I am not an audiophile, couldn't afford it then can't afford it now, though 'budget' equipment is very good. This is typical of its period. Brilliant.

Cover for Pro-ject vinyl cleaner

The cover is very easy to install and well designed and was soon in place finishing off the unit. It is very welcome as it's surprising how much dust accumulates. I am impressed by how sturdy and strong it is. Good investment.
