    Freesat
TV reception in my area is not good so years ago, when cable was installed in my street, I subscribed to Telewest analogue TV, and then to Virgin digital. With the advent of digital TV, I bought an upgraded aerial, a signal booster and a set top box. This was a considerable improvement over analogue reception but still subject to interference from planes and trains, so I kept my Virgin service, who also supply the landline and broadband, the quality and reliability of which are excellent because they are via fibre optic cables. However they are not cheap, so when Sky offered me all 3 for less than half the price plus free installation I happily accepted, but was dissatisfied and cancelled the contract. They took away the (faulty) box but left the dish (with 1 faulty cable). At this time my old standard TV became faulty, probably as result of connecting the faulty Sky box, so I bought a new flat screen HD ready TV and connected the standard definition Virgin box, set to RGB output, to the scart socket, with horrible results. My automatic scart adapter, which worked perfectly with my old TV, was incompatible with the new TV when handling RGB signals, so I had to use a manually switched one. I then bought a non Freesat HD receiver but this only had a 'now and next' electronic programme guide and a single input, so I bought a Sagem 250Mb recorder from Maplins at the bargain price of £180. My dish has 4 connectors. I replaced the faulty cable and connected the 2 cables to the Sagem, the HDMI cable to the TV, 1 scart cable to my DVD recorder and 1 to my VCR/DVD player. Another scart is connected from the DVD recorder to the TV. When the Sagem is first switched on it checks for a signal, asks for your postcode, scans for channels and then demands a parental pin code, whether you want one or not. This is an integral feature of Freesat. I then requested asearch for a software update which it found and I downloaded it. Installation took about 20 minutes. My next step was to sort through the huge list of TV channels and radio stations and decide on the ones I wanted. I tried to set up a favourites list but found I had to create 3. Managing these favourites is confusing so I deleted them and used the option to hide the unwanted channels. This is laborious as you have to enter the pin code to hide each channel. In fact changing any settings requires the pin code. With 2 cables attached, you can record 1 programme while watching another, or 2 programmes which overlap, but if 2 programmes are recording at the same time (in standby mode) and you switch on the box while it has been previously set to a third channel, one of the recordings will fail. The only warning you have is the LED display which says 'rec' but gives no indication of how many channels are in use. Obviously, to get the best picture, you set both the TV and the receiver to 1080i resolution. Although there are currently only 2 HD channels on Freesat, you do get the benefit of upscaling on the the other channels. However, with the TV in 720/1080 mode, you cannot use the zoom function to change the shape and size of the picture and the same function on the Sagem doesn't work in any mode. This means that you can only view a 'made for TV' film of programme in 4:3 aspect, reducing my 32" widescreen TV to 24". An undocumented feature is the ethernet socket. If you connect this to a broadband router, you get BBC iPlayer! The usb socket does nothing.

I used these kits to build an outdoor model street. Using an a3 laminator before constructing protecting from the elements the buildings survived 4 hours of constant rain which would otherwise have destroyed them.

It fitted but was incompatible with my pc. Something to do with error correction. I was warned about this but there was no way I could check in advance. Not recommended for most users.
