Poor design and manufacture.
1 of 1 found this helpful I have replaced 3 augers in two years on this MTD product. all of the welds break over time. The welds are not made strongly enough, so they break after relatively few hours of use. I would say it is not designed to hold up. I think that MTD needs to reengineer this product to make it more sturdy.
